White Helene Johnson Shirley Cean Youngs John B. Knowlton Building a Showcase for American Fine Art Incorporated in 1914, the Lyme Art Association continues the tradition of presenting fine art exhibitions in its own gal¬ lery. Exhibitions of Lyme Impressionist paintings began in 1902, and were held every summer in the Phoebe Griffin Noyes Li¬ brary in Old Lyme until August 6,1921, when the present Lyme Art Association gallery opened. American Impressionist paint¬ ers Gifford Beal, Louis Paul Dessar, Childe Hassam, and Willard L. Metcalf joined with Will Howe Foote, Henry Rankin Poore, Allen B. Talcott, and Carleton Wiggins in the early ex¬ hibitions of the Association. The Lyme Art Association gallery was the culmination of seven years of planning by artists Frank Bicknell, William Chadwick, Harry Hoffman, Wilson Irvine, Lawton Parker, Wil¬ liam Robinson, Edward Rook, and Gregory Smith. The build¬ ing site was adjacent to Miss Florence Griswold's Late Geor¬ gian mansion where many of the artists gathered each sum¬ mer season. The land was purchased from Miss Florence in 1917. The building committee, chaired by Lawton Parker, worked with architect Charles A. Platt, designer of the Freer Art Gallery in Washington, D.C. The plans for the gallery called for perfect lighting and architectural compatibility with the other buildings in the New England village of Old Lyme. In its review of the opening exhibition, the New York Times praised the gallery as, "an embodiment of art in harmony with its natural surroundings." A fourth spacious room, the Goodman Gallery, was built in 1938. It was donated by Mrs. William Owen Goodman in memory of her husband, a Chi¬ cago art patron and the Association's third president. In addition to the artist members' annual summer exhibi¬ tion, in 1925 the Art Association held the first "Water Color" show, now known as the Spring Exhibition. The season sched¬ ule expanded again seven years later with the first Annual Autumn Members' Exhibition. In 1938, the annual summer exhibition added water colors, pastels, prints, and drawings to a display previously restricted to paintings and sculpture. The first annual Associate Members' Exhibition was held in 1992. Today the Lyme Art Association hosts exhibitions on a year- round schedule with art shows which range from children's works to those of its esteemed members. Periodically, retro¬ spective exhibitions of the founding artists are held, drawn from letters, books, photographs, and other documents in the Association's archives. Further, in keeping with the Associa¬ tion's commitment to provide a showcase for some of the region's finest and newest contemporary representational art¬ ists, the spacious gallery is offered as an exhibition site to the community's cultural and educational organizations. An invitation to Join us The Lyme Art Association membership is composed of noted artists, loyal patrons, and ardent admirers - anyone interested in shar¬ ing our enthusiasm for maintaining our his¬ toric building and providing a showcase for area artists to display their latest work. Associate members are welcome to attend monthly business meetings; take part in the everyday activity of the gallery; and receive opening reception invitations to all exhibi¬ tions, the Association's Gallery Notes news¬ letter, and the announcements of workshops, demonstrations, lectures, and special pro¬ grams. Membership forms are available at the front desk in the gallery or by inquiry to the Membership Committee. Artist Members are the governing body of the Association. They are elected by a vote taken at the Annual Fall Meeting. Any inter¬ ested professional representational artist, liv¬ ing within a reasonable distance of Old Lyme, Connecticut, is invited to write to the Screen¬ ing Committee of the Association to request application guidelines. Artist demonstrations & workshops are offered throughout the year. Special programs such as outdoor painting days or lectures , sponsored with neighboring cultural BiSfe organizations are also presented. mSm Direct all inquiries to the HBhL SBffl| Director, Lyme Art address below.
