Permuted Display 103 v v y v V r 3 INTRODUCTION ^ The Health Promotion andEducation Thesaurus 2005 * contains more than 1,500 terms that are used to describe literature and program items in the Health Promotion and Education Database, ^ the Prenatal Smoking Cessation Database, and the Epilepsy Education, Management and Prevention A Activities Database. The databases, produced by the National Centerfor Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) ofthe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, can be accessed ^ through the Chronic Disease Prevention (CDP) Databases, and the CDPFile CD-ROM. (See pages iv-v for more information on these databases and howto access them.) This edition ofthe Thesaurus is the result ofthe continuing, cumulative process of indexing items * for these databases. Ill a ^ DESCRIPTION OF NCCDPHP DATABASES The National Centerfor Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (NCCDPHP) ofthe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention produces the following three bibliographic health information databases. Health Promotion andEducation Database The Health Promotion and Education Database contains more than 35,600 entries on chronic disease prevention, health promotion, and health education, emphasizing methodologyand the application of effective programs and interventions. Approximately510 new records are added quarterly. The database contains program descriptions and bibliographic citations and abstracts ofjournal articles, book chapters, reports, conference proceedings, curricular materials, and some nonpublished materials. PrenatalSmoking Cessation Database The Prenatal Smoking Cessation Database contains more than 3,400 entries emphasizing the application ofeffective prenatal smoking cessation program activities and risk reduction efforts. Approximately 90 new records are added quarterly. Begun in 1994, the database contains descriptions of prenatal smoking cessation programs and risk reduction interventions and bibliographic citations and abstracts ofjournal articles, monographs, technical reports, proceedings, papers, policy documents, legislation, unpublished documents, and curricular materials. EpilepsyEducation, ManagementandPreventionActivities Database The Epilepsy Education, Management and Prevention Activities Database contains more than 4,300 entries emphasizing the application ofeffective epilepsyearlydetection and control program activities and risk reduction efforts. Approximately 120 new records are added quarterly. Begun in 1994, the database contains descriptions ofepilepsyearlydetection and control programs and risk reduction interventions and bibliographic citations and abstracts ofjournal articles, monographs, technical reports, proceedings, papers, policydocuments, legislation, unpublished documents, and curricular materials. IV ACCESSING NCCDPHP DATABASES The NCCDPHP bibliographic databases are available through NCCDPHP's Chronic Disease Prevention (CDP) Databases and the CDPFile CD-ROM. Chronic Disease Prevention (CDP) Databases *\ The NCCDPHP databases are available as the Chronic Disease Prevention (CDP) Databases on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website, http://www.cdc.gov/cdp. The CDP Databases also include one additional database, NCCDPHP Publications, which provides access to publications authored by NCCDPHP staff since 1988. Updated monthly, the CDP Databases feature over 46,000 citations and abstracts ofitems, such asjournal articles, books, program materials and descriptions. Full text of * selected items is also available. CDP File *, CDPFile, shortforthe Chronic Disease Prevention File, is an easy-to-use CD-ROM that allows users to search the NCCDPHP databases, identifygroups and individuals working in chronic disease prevention, and obtain state-specific lists and information on health promotion programs. There are two additional databases on CDPFile: the Chronic Disease Prevention Directory (CDPD), and the NCCDPHP ? Publications Database. S'ngle copies cost $34.00 (domestic), $47.60 (foreign). w V 5 ^ HOW TO USE THE THESAURUS Thesaurus Structure The Health Promotion and Education Thesaurus has two sections: An alphabetic displayand a permuted display. Alphabetic Display The alphabetic display presents all terms in alphabetic order. Each term is accompanied byany definite scope notes and its complete hierarchic cross-reference structure. (Scope notes and cross- references are explained below.) The following is an example ofan entry in the alphabetic display: Thesaurus term Audiovisual aids Scope note SN Instructional materials that make use ofsight and sound. [See also Visual aids and Sound recordings] Used for UF Audiovisual materials Broaderterm BT Instructional materials Narrower term NT Films Videodisks(1988) Videotapes Related term RT Music videos (1991) Sound recordings Television Theater Visual aids Selected nonpreferred terms are also listed, with instructions to use the preferred term forthat concept; for example: Nonpreferred term Audiovisual materials Preferred term USE Audiovisual aids Permuted Display The permuted, or key-word-out-of-context (KWOC), display extracts and alphabetically lists each keyword in each descriptor and displays it in bold print above and to the left ofthe set of descriptors from which it was extracted. The key word itself is not always valid as a descriptor. Nonpreferred (UF) terms, which are listed in the alphabetic display, are not included in the permuted display. VI
