It saddened me that I was unable to continue to work with my dear friend and colleague
Dr. Cherie Rector on the ninth edition of this textbook. Her unwavering devotion to
public health nursing practice, research, and nursing education has been an inspiration to
me over the past decade. Cherie and her team of contributors reflect the best that our
specialty practice has to offer. I join her in encouraging all of you to consider practicing in
the community at some point in your career. There is no better way to make real and
lasting changes to the health and welfare of the public, whether it is locally, nationally, or in
the international arena. I would also like to express my gratitude to Dr. Judy Allender. It
was she who first gave me the opportunity to join her as a contributor in the sixth edition
and to team with Cherie as a coauthor for the seventh and eighth editions. Her mentorship
in public health nursing education provided the opportunity for me to share with so many
students my passion for this specialty and my belief that there is not a finer career than
serving as a PHN.

Despite this being the ninth edition of this textbook, it remains a work in progress.
Feedback from nursing students and faculty, as well as from working public health nurses,
continues to be reflected in this edition of the book. It is hoped that this textbook meets
the needs of students and faculty, and continuing comment and reaction is always
welcome.
The contributors, both continuing and new to this edition, have worked diligently, and
gratitude is owed for sharing their expertise and knowledge. It is also important to
acknowledge the work of past contributors whose words may still be found in some form in
this ninth edition. I am especially grateful to have worked with Dr. Kristine Warner on the
last two editions of this book and appreciate the thought and insight she has always
brought to this project. I would also like to acknowledge the work of Dr. Judy Allender,
who first gave me the opportunity to contribute to the fifth and sixth editions of this
textbook, and then to work with Kris Warner as coauthors on the past two editions.
Editors Shana Murph, Jennifer Forestieri and Christina Burns, as well as the
administrative staff at Wolters Kluwer, have worked tirelessly, and their efforts are greatly
appreciated. Natalie Silver, who helped with photos/permissions and APA references, was a
