Theincludesandexcludeslistisgivenattheheadofeachclass.Ittellstheuserof CESMM4whichgeneraltypesofworkareincludedinaclassandwhichclassescover othersimilarworkwhichisexcludedfromthatclass.Insomecases,forexamplein classesA,C,D,IandV,thescopeorcoverageoftheitemsinaclassisalsogiven. TheselistsshouldnotberegardedmerelyasanindextoCESMM4;theyareimportant totheinterpretationofthecoverageofthebillitemsgeneratedbytheclasses.Clearly thelistsdonotsetouttobecomprehensive;theydonotmentioneverythingwhichis includedoreverythingwhichisexcluded. Theclassificationtableisthetabulationoftheworkcomponentscoveredbyaclass, dividedintothethreedivisionsasdescribedinsection3.Thehorizontallinesinthe tabulationindicatewhichlistsoffeaturesfromonedivisionapplytowhichfeaturesin theotherdivisions.Thisisusuallystraightforward,butmustbegivencloseattention wherethelinesareatdifferentlevelsinthedifferentdivisions.Headingsaregivenin somelistsoffeaturesandareprintedinitalicsinCESMM4.Theyshouldbeincludedin itemdescriptionsinallcaseswheretheywouldnotduplicateinformation.Forexample, theheading‘CementtoBS12orBS146’,isobviouslyessentialinthedescriptionsfor itemsF1-3(cid:1) 1-4coveringprovisionofconcreteasotherwisetheinformationabout cementisnotgiven. Inmanyplacestheclassificationtableusestheword,‘stated’,inphrases;suchas, ‘Formwork:statedsurfacefeatures’,and,‘Width:statedexceeding300mm’.Writtenin fullthesephrasesmightbecome:‘Thisitemclassificationisforformworkwhichhasa particularsurfacefeature.Descriptionsofitemsinthisclassificationshallstatethe particularsurfacefeaturerequired’and‘Thisitemclassificationisforthingsthewidthof whichexceeds300mm.Descriptionsofitemsinthisclassificationshallstatetheactual widthofthethingsrequired’. Therulesontheright-handpagesareasimportantastheclassificationtables.Inone sensetheyaremoreimportantassometimestheyoverruletheclassificationtable.The rulesarearrangedalongsidethesectionsoftheclassificationtowhichtheyapply.Thisis indicatedbythehorizontallineswhichalignfromtheleft-totheright-handpages. Rulesprintedaboveadoublelineapplytoallitemsinaclass(seeparagraph3.11). ThetermswhichareprintedinitalicsintherulesarethosewhichareCESMM4 EXAMPLEStakendirectlyfromtheclassificationtable.Thisstyleofprintingis adoptedasanaidtocross-referencebetweenthetablesandtherules;ithasnoeffecton interpretationoftherules. CESMM4usessomeuntraditionalterms.TheyareadoptedtocomplywithBritish Standardsortokeepupwiththemovetostandardiseunitsandtermsunderthegeneral umbrellaofmetrication.Thuspipeshaveaborenotadiameter,becausetheboreisthe diameteroftheholedownthemiddle,andcannotbeconfusedwiththeoutsidediameter ofthepipe.Massisthemeasureofthequantityofmatter;weightisnolongerused. CESMM4referstoweightinonlyoneplacewhereitwasconsideredthatthealternative phrase‘piecemass’wouldbetotallyunfamiliar.Theabbreviationfornumberis‘nr’. ExamplebillpagesaregiveninthisbookforeachclassintheWorkClassification.The examplesarenottakenfromactualcontracts.Theycanbeusedasaguidetothelayout andstyleofbillsandbillitemscompiledusingCESMM4.Theexamplebillitems,not beingrelatedtoaparticularjob,showlessnon-standarddescriptionamplifyingthe basicdescriptionsthanisgiveninrealbills.Similarly,inordernottoimplythat particularspecificationdetailsarerecommended,itemdescriptionsintheexamplebills frequentlyrefertohypotheticalspecificationclausesbyaclausenumberortodetailson hypotheticaldrawings.Thisprocedureispermittedinrealbillsbyparagraph5.12butit isnotadoptedinthemtothesameextentasithasbeenintheexamplebillpages. TheexamplesusethecodenumbersintheWorkClassificationasitemnumbers.This practiceisrecommendedbutisnotarequirementofCESMM4.Itisadoptedatthe discretionofthebillcompilerinaccordancewithparagraph4.3. viii TheexamplesdonotcoveralltheitemswhichcouldbegeneratedbyCESMM4oreven alltheitemswhichmightoccurinonebill.Theygivehypotheticalitemswhich demonstratethoseapplicationsoftherulesinCESMM4whicharenovelorwould benefitfromdemonstrationforotherreasons.Theitemsarelaidoutasiftheywere pagesfromabilltodemonstratelayout,numberingandtheuseofheadings.The examplesillustratethealternativeproceduresopentobillcompilerswhereCESMM4 permitsalternatives.Compilersofrealbillsshouldtrytobeconsistent,notto demonstrateallthepossiblealternativesastheexamplesdo. Eachheadinganditemdescriptionintheexamplebillpagesendswithafullstop.This isahelpfuldisciplinewhentherearetwoormoreheadingsatthetopofonebillpage.
