The Arts Academy is committed to a rigorous academic and arts education for students who are eager to think creatively and independently, to question, and to take risks within a college preparatory program. As a pilot school within the Boston Public Schools, the Arts Academy is charged with being a labo- ratory of academic innovation and a beacon for arts education. The Arts Academy is a collaborative project between the Boston Public Schools and the ProArts Consortium, an association of six internationally known institu- tions of higher learning specializing in the visual arts, performing arts, and archi- tecture: Berklee College of Music, Boston Architectural Center, The Boston Conser- vatory, Emerson College, Massachusetts College of Art, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Dear Class of 2002, It seems only yesterday that most of you entered the Boston Arts Academy as freshmen. Some of you were in our advisories! We think back now to that first year, and about the journey that we have taken together. How could any of us have known how it would turn out? How could we have imagined all that you would accomplish and create, and all that you would contribute to this school? And how could we have known how much the world would change during your time here? How could any of us have foreseen how September 11 would change our lives? Each of you, in your own way, is leaving a profound and lasting impression on this school. Whether it is through the emblem you made with Wen Ti Tsin that now hangs on the doors of the Black Box, or your work on the teach-in on political terrorism, or any of your many other works of art and scholarship, your years at BAA have changed us all. We have learned together, we have grown together, and we have created a school that we are all proud of. As you go forward in the next chapter of your life, whether to college, conservatory, or profes- sional jobs, we wish for you to have the Habits of the Graduate in your minds, hearts, and souls. What does it mean to be inventive? What does it mean to refine your work again and again? How do you connect what you know to other experiences? And, what does it mean to truly own your work and your ideas? We believe that you have grown enormously here and taken great risks intellectually and artisti- cally. You are prepared to begin to take your place in the world. You may not be able to change everything that needs to change, or to solve every problem. But you will make the world a more just and caring place. You have come to understand and empathize with differences. You know that art has the power to break down walls and to nurture the fragile and precious seeds of peace. We believe in you. We hope you will feel a responsibility to create art and scholarship that will help the rest of us to experience what it means to be a citizen of the world. We wish you all the best. We expect you to return and to keep us informed of your pursuits. Congratulations on your commencement! Warmly, Carmen Torres and Linda Nathan Faculty Photos Science Team: Joe Levin, Joy Bautista, R.
