In 1985 from July 2nd to August 12th I was on a study trip to the Soviet Union. During this time I spent four weeks in the Komi Republic. In July 1985 I con ducted field work along the Central Sysola in the villages of Vizinga and Kura tovo, the results of which are the texts printed here which I recorded on a tape recorder (Uher 4200 Report Stereo). On the occasion of a two-week study trip to the Soviet Union in 1989 Quly 3rd to August 12th) I spent two weeks on a field trip to Zyrian territory. At this time I recorded texts from the Central Vy cegda dialect (area around Syktyvkar) in the village of Soska on the banks of the Sysola using an Olympus Pearlcorder 5906 dictaphone. The material I collected consists almost exclusively of narratives and not of folklore genres. All of my in formants both those from Central Sysola and that from Central Vycegda were good narrators, but were not able to relate folklore texts (tales, songs, etc.). It would appear that folklore tradition in the Sysola area is slowly being forgotten. Perhaps the main reason for this is industrialization and the concomitant ex hausting daily work which extinguishes people's interest for poetry. These cir cumstances were pointed out as being the reason by one or two of my inform ants, when I asked them about folk-tales and folk-songs. I recorded the texts in the standard language on April 3rd, 1991 with the above-mentioned dictaphone from N. D. Manova who visited Vienna for several days during her stay in Buda pest. On my field-trip to the villages of Vizinga and Kuratovo I was accompanied by the Syktyvkar linguist V. A. Ljasev, who himself comes from Vizinga. For the field-trip to the village of Soska I had assistance from my colleagues G. G. Ba raksanov and J. G. Rocev. I would like to thank them as well as my informants here for their kind help and for all the trouble they took. My thanks go addition ally to Timothy Riese for translating the Hungarian text into English and com paring it with the Zyrian original. In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to the Austrian Academy of Sciences which in the framework of an Austro-Soviet scholarly agreement made it possible for me to travel to the Soviet Union twice on study trips.
