N U S G N I H C T A C We don’t just protect against little things like fleas and ticks, we look after the little things people love most about life with their pets. That’s because we know that when pets are healthy and happy, owners are happy too – it’s as true today as it was in 1892. So, for our big birthday, we’re celebrating 130 years of all the little things that make pet parents smile. Because simply, without them, there is no us. Taken several years ago, it typifies our love of cats. Hundreds of millions of pet cats are cared for across the globe and there are still so many people, like this man, who will care for the cats who don’t have owners. There is so much going on in the picture — firstly, just spotting all of the cats! If you look closely under the bench, you will see a set of feline ears just popping up. Then there is the tiny black kitten who looks so young to be fending for themselves. And finally, the beautiful setting. To bring down the number of street cats, many organisations are involved in humane programmes to neuter these cats and avoid so many more street cats being born. That will always be the long-term aim to stop the suffering of feral cats. However, it is heartening to see that so many people care — it is testament to our love of felines. os. ot h ck P o my St a Al of esy urt o c e: g a m I 4 Your Cat September 2022 www.yourcat.co.uk 5 (cid:71)(cid:82)(cid:75)(cid:94)(cid:102)(cid:93)(cid:3)(cid:88)(cid:79)(cid:97) (cid:15)(cid:46)(cid:44)(cid:44)(cid:50)(cid:28)(cid:26)(cid:45)(cid:67) Feline news New cat products (cid:79) (cid:79) HEALTH CAT’S BRUSH WITH DEATH AFTER SWALLOWING HAIR BOBBLES ASiamese cat called Marley Marley and Helen. shocked his owners and vets when it was discovered he had a belly full of hair bobbles. Marley’s owners hadn’t even noticed the feline had been eating the bands until he fell ill, but X-rays revealed the three-year-old feline had a huge mass, over 30, of the hair accessories in his stomach. Staff at Acorn Veterinary Practice in West Kirby decided the best thing to do was to operate. But they were shocked to find a mound of hair ties taking up “around 80 per cent” of Marley’s stomach, which were thought to have built up over “quite some time.” Marley’s owner Helen Unitt says the hair accessories have since been hidden away and she and husband Pete are now keeping a close eye on Oliver. their bobble-chomping cat. ey Helen says: “The first time c es: Sta wwero nnogt iwciethd Msoamrleeyth winags wwahse n g a m he started vomiting. I don’t think so. They can’t resist them. Putting a tentative paw inside, then curling around and around before squeezing down into the most unfeasibly confined space. Even a small square on the ground marked out by tape can draw them in like a magnet — and there’s many an online video to prove that. DO THEY One of the reasons for a cat’s desire for a confined space is safety. The instincts of their wild ancestors are hardwired in, so even though they may be in a perfectly nice secure home, they are drawn to behaviours that developed to keep them safe. DO THAT? “Part of who they are is a predator, but because they’re a small animal and often solitary without a lot of defences and back-up, they’re also prey. Prey animals always like to have their options open to escape and they like to hide,” says Linda Ryan (inspiringpets.com), who is a certificated clinical animal behaviourist and registered veterinary nurse. Infuriating, entertaining, adorable… This behaviour also relates to their role as a hunter. “As a we love our cats’ funny little ways. predator, you’re looking into all the little nooks and crannies and you’re looking around to try to work out where your Read on to discover what’s behind prey has gone and often they’re in small spaces.
