The General Education requirements which form this program enable students to developthenecessarycognitiveskillsandintellectualperspectivestheywillneedtobesuccessful intheir majorfield ofstudy. Students entering York College in Fall 1997 will complete new General Education program requirements adopted to meet the needs of the graduates of the next century. The General Education requirementslistedinthecurrent College Catalogwill notbeofferedfollowing 1996, andthe 1997-1999 College Catalogwill provide the correct requirements forstudents entering in 1997.These requirements are as follows: General Education Requirements: All baccalaureate degree candidates must complete aminimum of 124 credits, achieve a cumulative gradepointaverageof2.0orabove, andcompletetheGeneralEducation Requirementsdescribedbelow. Courses used to complete general education requirements may not be taken on a pass/fail basis, and credits earned in courseswhich are primarily developmental in nature, (E 100, MAT 100, EE 104), may not be applied to degree requirements. CommonCore Requirements: Courses in thecommoncoreofstudy mustbecompletedwith aminimum grade of "2." Based on previous educational performance, students may be required to complete additional courses to achieve the required level ofcompetency in each area, or they may be exempted throughthe placement orcredit by examinationprocess. E 101 English Composition (3credits) E200 WritingAbout Literature (3 credits) CM 104 Human Communication (3 credits) MAT 108 CriticalThinking and Problem SolvinginMathematics (3 credits) IFS 101 Information Literacy (2credits) Physical Education (2credits) Area Distribution Requirements Each student must select courses to satisfy the following area : distribution requirements from the list of applicable courses developed by the department. Within the coursesselected, a minimum offourcourses must becompleted at the 200 level orabove. Area I: FineArts and Humanhies (6credits) Area IE Social and Behavioral Sciences (6 credits) Area IIL Laboratory Sciences (6-8credits) Area IV: American Civilization,American Government, andWestern Civilization (6 credits) AreaV: International Studies/Foreign Language: (6credits in one ofthese two areasofstudy; iflanguage isselected, both courses must be in the same language) Elective Requirements Students must complete a minimum of an additional 12 electives in courses : outside their majorfield ofstudy. These elective courses may be used to complete a minor, but no more than 6creditsofelectives may be satisfiedby physical education activity courses.
