Those who participated in the Yoga for Awareness class, which also included meditation and pranayama exercis- es, experienced lower levels of pain, less fatigue, elevated moods, and an improved ability to cope with the pain in a more positive light. FRUIT JUICE DOES NOT LEAD TO DIABETES A new US study states that drinking pure fruit juice does not lead to diabetes. After carrying out 18 trials, it was found to not have significant effect on fasting blood glucose, fasting blood insulin or insulin resistance. Previous studies suggest- ed that drinking fruit juice high in natural sugars and low in fibre increases diabetes risk, but the US Center for Chemical Regulation found it has ‘a largely neutral role’. AIRLINE LAUNCHES IN-FLIGHT YOGA Hong Kong–based airline Cathay Pacific have begun playing an in-flight programme dedicated to yoga and meditation, called ‘Travel Well With Yoga’ as part of their new ‘Life Well Travelled’ initiative. Made in collaboration with Pure Yoga, the six individual episodes are aimed to enhance the overall travel experience by recommend- ing asanas and meditations for passengers to practise before, during and after the flight. All the exercises are designed to be performed while seated to improve cir- culation, enhance joint mobility, and relax the mind for a comfortable and restful journey. 88 YYOOGGAAMMAAGGAAZZIINNEE..CCOOMM FINAL ALL MAGAZINE APRIL 18.indd 8 01/03/2018 23:10 NEWSNEWSNEWSNEWSNEWS CANCER GUM RISK Brushing your teeth regularly can slash the risk of can- cer by over a quarter, according to new research from doctors in Maryland, US. The study claims that bugs that get into the bloodstream via bleeding gums can cause deadly tumours by triggering inflammation. YOGA FOR LABOUR PHOBIA Six pregnant women from London who were suffering from to- kophobia – an intense fear of going through labour – were given £500 to attend yoga, massage, hypnotherapy and fitness classes to give them a ‘better birthing experience’. Waltham Forest Clinical Commissioning Group who awarded the funds, hoped the courses would encourage the women to opt for a natural birth and shun ex- pensive Caesarean sections which costs the NHS £3,781. It now has plans to expand the scheme. SPICE UP YOUR BRAIN Taking curcumin, the bright yellow polyphenol com- pound found in turmeric on a daily basis, has shown to improve memory, attention span and mood in elderly people with mild, age-related memory loss according to a study published in the American Journal of Geriat- ric Psychiatry. Researchers from the University of Cali- fornia also referenced that in India, where turmeric is regularly used in dishes including curry, senior citizens traditionally have a lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and overall better cognitive performance. DIET CAN HELP IVF TREATMENT Eating a Mediterranean diet that is high in fruit, vegetables, beans, wholegrains and oily fish and low in meat and dairy, may increase some women’s chances of becoming pregnant and giving birth through IVF treatment, according to researchers at Harokopio Uni- versity, Greece. The study looked at the diets of 244 women when they enrolled for the first cycle of treatment in Athens. The classes, held at the chain’s New- bury, Basingstoke and Banbury branches, took place in private rooms and cafes on site that was closed to shoppers. Waitrose has also been trialling a personal nutritionist service in its Canary Wharf and Kingston- Upon-Thames shops since the beginning of January. MINDFULNESS MAY REDUCE CRAVINGS A new review of 30 studies on mindfulness by City Uni- versity London, has found that mindfulness strategies may help prevent or interrupt cravings for food and drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol by occupying short-term memory. It was found that some of the beneficial effects in relation to craving are likely to stem from interrupting cravings by loading working memory, a part of our short- term memory which is concerned with immediate con- scious perceptual and linguistic processing. MEDITATION CUTS DETENTION FOR KIDS For the last three years, the staff at Robert W. Cole- man Elementary in Baltimore, Maryland have sent unruly children to a meditation room instead of detention, which has seen remarkable results with a dramatic decrease in referrals and zero suspen- sions. Children who enter the ‘Mindful Moment Room’ go there to stretch, practise deep breathing and various yoga poses which allows them space to calm down and think about their feelings. YOGA CAN HELP WITH DEPRESSION A small study by the Center for Integrative Psychiatry in the Netherlands, has found that people who had depression for an average of 11 years and practised 2.5 hours of yoga ev- ery week for nine weeks, had a decrease in the symptoms of depression, anxiety, stress and rumination. These benefits persisted for four months after the study. 10 YOGAMAGAZINE.COM FINAL ALL MAGAZINE APRIL 18.indd 10 01/03/2018 23:10
