Man suffocated after smashing his nose in a fall AMANfromManorParkdiedaftercollapsing inthebathroom,aninquestheard. PaulSmith,53,ofSixthAvenue,wasfound deadonJune4lastyearafterfallingfromthe toiletandsmashinghisnose. Walthamstow Coroner’s Court was told his stepsonFrankieCadedescribedhimasasocia- ble,trustingandhelpfulman. Mr Smith was discovered lying in his bath- roombyafriend,MichaelWarburton,whowas passingbyhisaddress. Hewaspronounceddeadatthescenebypara- medics. DrIanCalder,apathologist,explainedtothe hearingthatthepositioninwhichMrSmithfell meantthatwiththedamagetohisnosehecould notbreathe. The cause of death was given as postural asphyxia. ThereasonforMrSmith’scollapsewasnot known although Dr Calder suspected that it mayhavebeendowntothefactthathehadan enlargedheart. The inquest was told Mr Smith was unem- ployedandhadpreviouslysufferedfromalco- holism,althoughhehadsuccessfullycompleted adetoxprogrammeandalcoholdidnotplaya partinhisdeath. Coroner Ian Wade described the death as a tragicaccidentwhichcouldnothavebeenpre- vented. Heagreedwiththecauseofdeathfromthe post-mortem examination and ruled that it wouldbedescribedasanaccident.
