As students who have graduated from college in the twenty-first century the idea of technology is no longer a foreign concept or a dream ofthe future, but rather a reality. There is no way to escape its grip in aworldwhere even the desktop computer is becoming athing ofthe past. Everythingis immediate, as the hne between a cellphone, an ipod and acomputer is foreverblurred, creatingaworldwhere everyone owns at least one ofthese devices and everyone expects an instantaneous response. We live in atime where anything can be done from aphone andthe idea of a paper map and a house phone are both things ofthe past. All ofthis technology and access to information is a constant reminder of how far we have come as a society and how far we have yet to go. The possibilities are endless and as the newgeneration ofcollege graduates we have the ability to push these possibilities to their hmits. The past is an example ofwhat we can accomplish, but it is not a boundary. As the graduating class of 2011 you have an opportunity to test these limits, see how far you can go and what you can accomplish. It is time to take a risk, step forward, and no matter where you are headed it is time to see what possibilities lie ahead. The use of technology and the age that we have grown up in is a stepping stone to the future and now is our opportunity to contribute to this progress. The world is no longer a small place and these advances in technology have bridgedgaps thatwere neverthoughtpossible. It has givenus aglobalized, internationalsocietythat is oursto experience. The possibilities are infinite and it is our turnto explore them and see how far we can go. Wherever the future takes you, remember to push forward no matter the challenges and to take advantage of the opportunities awarded to us. The students, faculty, and staff of URI are what make our university a special place for learning and discovery. Yes, we are privileged to work together in a "small, beautiful place," but it is our "big thinkers," our "global thinkers," that truly distinguish the University of Rhode Island. URI is successful because the people here do more than "think" - they put their ideas and vision into actions - actions that make a difference.
