Towards the middle ofthe 14th century the French cleric and courtier Jean Froissart decided to write a history ofthe wars ofhis time, beginning with the Battle ofPoitiers. __ (L BOSTON PUBLIC, UBRKRY Encouraged by Queen Philippa ofEngland, he visited the English lords and French chevaliers taken prisoner in the battle. He gave the whole work the title Chronicles ofFrance, England, Scotland, Spain, Brittany, andFlanders. It took the story up to the end ofthe 14th century, the major part dealing with the Hundred Years War.
