GUIDE TO READERS The Index is divided into two sections. Author and Subject. The abstract serial numbers run from | to 9,000-10,000 each year; numbers followed by the letter *P’ indicate patents. Author Index The Author Index is based on all authors/patentees of an article or patent, unless there are more than four, when only the name of the first author will have been taken. To facilitate searching, abstract numbers in the Author Index are grouped under the WSCA section numbers if there are more than five entries under one author/ patentee. Russian names are transliterated in accordance with the standard English system. Where articles by Russian authors have been taken from French or German journals, the spelling of their names will have been altered, if necessary, to render the Author Index consistent. Subject Index The subject matter of the abstracts, not merely their titles, has been examined in the construction of the Subject Index. To avoid undue proliferation, indexing terms have been chosen for each abstract with attention to terms already used for others, and to the level of specificity of the abstract. In searching on a given subject (e.g, phosphating), broader (e.g, pretreatment) and narrower (e.g, zinc phosphate) terms should also be considered. Likewise, synonyms or near-synonyms have been gathered under single terms; thus, for electrophoretic coating or electropainting, electrocoating has been chosen. Cross references have been included where appropriate. It should be noted that cross-references may refer to terms used in the index during any of the previous five years, and not just to entries in the present index. Chemicals, an important part of this index, are particularly prone to problems in control of synonyms and detail of indexing. Locants (e.g, ortho-, 1,2-) have been removed from chemical names, as have most substituent groups. Where reference is made to the toxicity of a specific chemical, however, substituent groups are more likely to be included. Therefore, as with other types of term, both the broader and narrower concepts should be considered. If the reader's first choice of term (e.g, diisocyanatotoluene) is not found, synonyms should be tried (in this case, toluene diisocyanate). Polymers are indexed in various ways, depending upon the abstract, viz: under the monomer (copolymers of, etc.) or the polymer (vinyl chloride polymers, vinyl chloride copolymers, polyvinyl chloride). As properties and analytical methods are only used as primary indexing terms (main headings) if they are considered to be an important part of the article, abstracts referring to such concepts for specific materials should also be searched. Statistics, e.g, for the German paint industry, are found under the subject (paint industry) rather than the country. Legislation and regulations for specific countries may be located under these two terms. AUTHOR INDEX —_— DE BENZO Z — 466. MAD rege: AAMODT L —— 9706. ABATE K — ABBAS M F —m ers.
