A particular place in this long development belongs to St. Thomas. . . . In an age when Christian thinkers were rediscovering the treasures of ancient philosophy, and more particularly of Aristotle, Thomas had the great merit of giving pride of place to the harmony which exists between faith and reason. I appeal also to philosophers, and to all teachersofphilosophy, asking them to have the courage to recover, in the flow of an enduringly valid philosophical tradition, the range of authentic wisdom and truth. —John Paul II, Fidesetratio Carlson-00FM_Layout 1 11/7/11 1:45 PM Page viii Carlson-00FM_Layout 1 11/7/11 1:45 PM Page ix CONTENTS Acknowledgments xi Introduction 1 The Nature of This Dictionary Selection and Internal Structure of Entries A 21 N 181 B 43 O 189 C 49 P 197 D 73 Q 229 E 89 R 231 F 105 S 243 G 115 T 267 H 121 U 279 I 131 V 285 J 149 W 291 K 153 X 297 L 157 Y 299 M 165 Z 301 Bibliography 303 Works by St. Thomas Aquinas in English Recent Commentaries and Elaborations on Perennial Themes Works by Other Authors Cited in This Dictionary List of Entries 333
