Emerson Dobash and Russell P. Dobash are members of the Department of Sociology at the University of Stirling. Since 1973 they have been working with Scotish Women's Aid, conducted research on violence against wives and have published extensively on the problem. Their major work is Violence Against Wives. They are currently completing a book comparing the British and North American response to violence against women. Anne Edwards is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia. Before going to Australia in 1968, she held teaching and research positions in Newcastle and Durham. She is a feminist sociologist whose main areas of teaching, research and writing are women and gender, social theory and deviance/social control. Her publications include Social Deviance in Australia, which she edited with P. Wilson. Susan S.M. Edwards is currently a Research Fellow at the Polytechnic of Central London, where she is engaged in a study of domestic violence and spousal homicide focusing on, amongst other things, the response of the police and the courts. She also lectures on criminology, medical sociology and women's issues courses. She contributes regularly to law, sociological and medical journals, and is the author of Female Sexuality and the Law (1981) and Women on Trial (1984), and the editor of Gender, Sex and the Law (1985). Eileen Green is Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Sheffield City Polytechnic where she teaches joint courses with Diana Woodward in women's studies and sociological. perspectives in the field of medicine. Her past research includes a qualitative study of the working lives of mothers employed on a part-time basis in various local industries in Sheffield. She is currently researching women's leisure on a project funded jointly by the Sports Council and the ESRC. Jalna Hanmer is co-ordinator of the Dip/MA Women's Studies (Applied) at the University of Bradford. She taught at the London School of Economics from 1974 until moving north in 1977.
