She was a 2013/14 Fulbright Scholar with residency at the University of Florida, and is now Senior Lecturer in the Department of Tourism, Sport and Hotel Management at Griffith Univer- sity. Catheryn’s current research interest is on tourist and guest behavior, with a passionate focus on women, families, and young children. She is also particularly interested in understanding these segments from an Asian perspective, and how their travel experiences and behaviors differ cross- culturally. Catheryn serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Hospi- tality and Tourism Education, the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Management, Tourism Review and Anatolia. She is an executive committee member of The Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Educa- tion (CAUTHE) and board member of the Asia Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE). She is also the founder and chair of Women Academics in Tourism (WAiT). Catheryn lives in a bayside suburb with her husband and their three young children, and attempts furniture upcycling in her spare time, when, she can find any. Erica Wilson, PhD Erica Wilson is Associate Professor and Deputy Head in the School of Business and Tourism, Southern Cross University. Her doctoral thesis (Griffith University) was an interpretive, qualitative exploration into the constraints faced by Australian solo women travelers. Erica also holds a postgraduate diploma in environmental studies (Adelaide University), and a first-class honors degree in tourism (James Cook University). Her scholarly publications and research interests focus on critical pedagogy in tourism, gender and tourism, leisure constraints and negotiation, sustain- able tourism in protected/World Heritage areas, and qualitative methodol- ogies. Erica currently sits on the Editorial Advisory Boards for Hospitality and Society, Journal of Tourism and Development, and the Annals of vi About the Editors Leisure Research. She is a co-coordinator of the Critical Approaches in Tourism and Hospitality Special Interest Group within CAUTHE. Erica lives “off the grid” on a rural property in northern New South Wales, with her partner and two children. She would love to have more time to be an independent woman traveler, but is content to stay put for a while and work in her veggie patch. CHAPTER AUTHORS Fiona Eva Bakas has a PhD in Tourism Gender and Economics from the University of Otago, New Zealand and a Master of Science in Ecotourism from Portsmouth University, UK. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. She is also an associate member of NGO Equality in Tourism and a member of the GOVCOPP research group. Maria Manuel Baptista has a PhD in the philosophy of culture. She is an Assistant Professor and researcher of Portuguese Culture Area in the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Aveiro University, Portugal. She is also Director of the PhD in Cultural Studies in the Department of Languages and Cultures of the Aveiro University (3rd cycle taught in collaboration with the Minho University, Portugal). Sue Beeton is a travel researcher, writer, blogger and Foundation Chair of the College of Eminent Professors at William Angliss Institute. She has conducted research into community development, film-induced tourism, and nature-based tourism, along with advising government in areas of public land management. As well as producing numerous academic papers and related media articles, she has published numerous books, including Ecotourism: A Practical Guide for Rural Communities; Commu- nity Development through Tourism; Film-Induced Tourism, and Tourism and the Moving Image. She founded the Asia Pacific chapter of the Travel and Tourism Research Association (TTRA) and is a Board Member of TTRA International as well as an Honorary Associate Professor at Latrobe University, Australia. Gisele Carvalho holds a Master of Science in Education and Environ- mental Management of the University of Brasilia, Brazil. She is Effective Professor of the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Pará State, IFPA. She is currently a PhD candidate in the Doctoral Program in Tourism at Aveiro University, Portugal, under the Gisele is also a member of the GOVCOPP research group. Carlos Costa is Full Professor and Director of the Department of Economics, Management, Industrial Engineering, and Tourism at the viii Chapter Authors University of Aveiro, Portugal. He holds a PhD and a Master of Science in Tourism from the University of Surrey, UK, and a Bachelor of Science in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Aveiro. He is Director of the Doctoral Program in Tourism, editor of the Journal of Tourism and Development, and a member of the executive board of the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness, and Public Policy. He is also the technical-scientific Director of the spin-off tourism company “idtour-unique solutions”. Bente Heimtun is Associate Professor at the UiT, The Arctic Univer- sity of Norway. Bente’s research interests are the sociology of tourism, gender studies, life course theories, the interface between the philosophies of feminist social sciences and the practices of tourism research, tourism employment, and place attachment. Recently she has turned her attention to winter tourism, with a focus on Northern Lights tourism performances situated in material, cultural, and social structures. Magdalena Hoffmann completed a nursing degree and obtained a post- graduate Master in hospital management and a MBA in health service management simultaneous to her employment as a registered nurse followed by a Master’s degree in public health. During her professional engagement, she filled the roles of ward manager as well as nursing expert in organizational development in a geriatric hospital. She is currently employed by the Medical University Graz and writing her dissertation. Her past and present fields of research are public health, communication in intensive care units, geriatrics, health tourism, and health literacy. Margret Jaeger completed her PhD research on women’s health politics in Austria and Brazil at the University of Graz, Austria. She worked as senior research scientist at the Department of Public Health & HTA at UMIT, University for Health and Life Sciences in Vienna until 2014. The study about health tourism and the evaluation of a health touristic facility was realized between 2013 and 2015 and supported by the Tyrolean Fund of Science. She currently works as independent researcher and teacher. Her research interests are cancer rehabilitation, health tourism and gender, and the development of transcultural competence for health professionals. Kelley A. McClinchey has a PhD in geography specializing in urban social and cultural geography. She is currently a part-time lecturer in the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Kelley studies the philosophies Chapter Authors ix of place in the context of tourism. Using a framework of sensuous and emotional geographies, she relates these specifically to literary travel, tourism and leisure mobilities, the tourism-migration nexus, and ethno- cultural urban festivals. She has published articles in academic journals, book chapters in edited volumes, and presented at several tourism and geography conferences. Paolo Mura is Senior Lecturer in Tourism and Program Director of the Postgraduate Programs at Taylor’s University, Malaysia. His research interests include tourist behavior, gender, young tourists, deviant behavior on holiday, and ethnographic approaches to research. Linda M. Myers is an independent researcher living in Northern Scot- land. Her background is in women’s and girls’ physical and outdoor education. As a mature student, she completed her PhD in Department of Tourism, at the University of Sunderland, UK. She received an ESRC research grant to present her work in South Korea at the World Leisure Conference. Her studies focus on women’s travel, with emphasis upon independent, backpacker, and gay women travelers. Her research interests include the value of travel to women, identity development, and identity reassessment resulting from the travel journey itself and from adventurous activity undertaken. Her publications include book chapters in Backpacker Tourism, Beyond Backpacker Tourism, International Sports Events and Annals of Leisure Research Australia and NewZealand Association. Maria Oprodovsky teaches in the registered nurses program and is lecturer in the bachelor’s degree program in the Campus Social Medical Center South of Vienna belonging to the Vienna Hospital Association. She is a registered nurse and has been working at a surgical ward before she went through a training program in pedagogics for nurses. She has earned a Bachelor Degree in Nursing Science and a Master Degree in Health Science from the private university UMIT in Hall, Tyrol. Mandy Rowe began her working life as a psychologist for the RAAF, which is where she met her husband. Together, they have had two long sojourns overseas and returned to Australia in 2002, settling in rural Victoria. For the next eight years, Mandy owned a luxury bed and breakfast. Inspired by her worldwide group of very good friends, she founded Broads Abroad Travel Network (a global female-only online hospitality exchange), and has had published two books: a memoir, Broads Abroad: One Woman’s Journey, and a quirky travel compilation, Broads Abroad: Worldly Wise.
