WORLD Leadership CONGRESS 2014: ITSTARTSHERE A M BA S S A D O R G U I D E B O O K Dear HOBY Ambassadors and Parents -‐-‐ Congratulations! You registered for the 2014 World Leadership Congress, which will be held July 19 – 26, 2014 at Loyola University-‐Chicago in Chicago, Illinois! My name is Russell Tanguay and I have the privilege serving as the 2014 WLC Chairman, aka the “HOBY Daddy.” On behalf of all the HOBY staff and volunteers, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 WLC. Please read this packet of information carefully and in its entirety, and KEEP this information handy as you prepare to depart for Chicago! Here’s a little bit of what to expect before, and during, your WLC experience. From my previous experiences, I can tell you that the WLC is a tremendous undertaking that requires teamwork and communication. With your help, together we will create a high-‐energy and high-‐impact environment in which you will learn, have lots of fun, and build lifelong friendships. The theme of the 2014 WLC is "It Starts Here." HOBY’s curriculum is based on the Social Change Model of Leadership, which you will use to develop an idea so you can leave WLC inspired to implement your idea back home, answering the question Dr. Schweitzer asked Mr. O’Brian, “What are you going to do with this?” As you plan for the WLC experience, please consider these concepts and how they have impacted your life thus far. The best advice I can give you prior to your arrival is: be open to new experiences, be willing to stretch your boundaries and be ready for the time of your life. This will be the most outstanding week of your life. From friendships, to life lessons, to global understandings, WLC is an incredible opportunity that an exclusive few have the chance to experience. I am a 2000 Connecticut/WLC alumnus and cherish each of my HOBY memories. I once was in your shoes fourteen years ago and can attest to the transformation you will experience. HOBY has brought me many opportunities, skills and friendships far beyond what I could have imagined thirteen years ago. About a week or so before the WLC, your group facilitator will contact you. In your group, there will be twelve ambassadors from all over the world. You will get to know ambassadors from China, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Mexico, Argentina, Canada, and many other countries. Our ambassadors will represent all areas of the United States. Your group will be with four other groups in a section. This gives you even more opportunity to meet and learn from ambassadors from diverse backgrounds and cultures. I am excited to welcome you to Chicago very soon! Russell Tanguay 2014 WLC Chairman aka “HOBY Daddy” #WLC14 CHICAGO, IL THE HOBY STORY For five decades, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has worked diligently at helping young people make a difference and become posiCve catalysts for change—in the home, school, workplace and the community. As one of the naCon’s foremost non-‐profit, non tax-‐supported youth leadership development organizaCons, HOBY is respected worldwide. Beginnings in an African Jungle In the summer of 1958, actor Hugh O’Brian received the invitaCon that would change his life. O’Brian, then 33, was in Winnipeg, Manitoba, parlaying his fame as television’s legendary WyaS Earp into extra income by guest-‐starring with a circus. Then the cable arrived from French Equatorial Africa: Dr. Albert Schweitzer would welcome him at any Cme. O’Brian had long admired the German doctor-‐missionary-‐theologian-‐musician. “I’d read so much about him,” he reflects. “He was a great humanitarian who could have done anything he wanted in the world, and there he was in the middle of Africa taking care of people.” Within two weeks he was on his way, by commercial airliner, bush plane and canoe, to the famed hospital that Schweitzer had founded in 1913 on the banks of the Ogooue River in Lambarene. There he was met by a very old man with a huge, white walrus mustache, wearing white pants, shirt and pith helmet. “That was his uniform,” says O’Brian, recalling his first sighCng of Schweitzer. The actor spent nine days at the clinic complex where Schweitzer and volunteer doctors and nurses, working without electricity or running water, cared for paCents, including many with leprosy. Schweitzer, then 83, who had received the 1952 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in behalf of the “Brotherhood of NaCons,” was concerned about global peace prospects and was impressed that the young American had taken the trouble to visit him. The doctor led the actor through history over those evenings. Schweitzer was convinced that the United States was the only country in the world with the ability to bring about peace. “He said the United States must take a leadership role,” O’Brian recounts, “or we are a lost civilizaCon.” It was an unforgeSable nine days. And, as O’Brian departed, Schweitzer took his hand and asked: “Hugh, what are you going to do with this?” Two weeks ader returning from his 1958 meeCng with Schweitzer, O’Brian put together a prototype seminar for young leaders. Five Decades Later. . . From 1958 to 1967, leadership seminars took place in Los Angeles for sophomores from California. In 1968 the scope of the HOBY program grew to include naConal and internaConal parCcipants, and the seminar moved annually to different major ciCes across the United States. Thus, the InternaConal Leadership Seminar, now known as the World Leadership Congress (WLC), began. In an effort to include more students naConwide, three-‐ and four-‐day State Leadership Seminars (LS) were insCtuted in 1977. By 1982 , State Leadership Seminars were being conducted annually in all 50 United States. In 1991 HOBY extended its reached and started a one-‐day leadership program called Community Leadership Workshops (CLeWs). Annually, 10,000 tenth graders, represenCng as many high schools naConwide and across the world, graduate from HOBY Leadership Seminars. In 1991, HOBY added one-‐day leadership seminars called Community Leadership EducaCon Workshops (CLEWs). These workshops have become popular because schools may select mulCple students to parCcipate. For more informaCon about HOBY acCviCes and sponsorship opportuniCes, please contact us. #WLC14 CHICAGO, IL WORLD Leadership CONGRESS 2014: ITstartsHERE Hugh O’Brian spent nine days in the jungles of Africa with world humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. Dr. Schweitzer saw the need for leadership and the importance of young people thinking for themselves. As Hugh left to return to the United States, Dr. Schweitzer asked, “Hugh, what are you going to do with this?” It was Hugh’s starting point in providing service and positively impacting others’ lives. Like Hugh’s trip to Africa, HOBY is a starting point for the Ambassadors. HOBY was Hugh’s answer. At WLC, our Ambassadors will have a similar experience. Inspired by Hugh’s actions, the Ambassadors will find their own answers to Dr. Schweitzer’s question. Focusing on the ideals and principles of why Hugh founded HOBY, the Ambassadors will recognize and develop their leadership potential and work to implement their entrepreneurial ideas into action. Ambassadors will be challenged to answer the question, “What are YOU going to do with this?” And... What an Ambassador chooses to do, starts here at WLC. “If you want to see your full potential and reach it, this is the place where it starts.” - 2013 WLC Ambassador The WLC Global Challenge HOBY WLC Ambassadors will participate in the HOBY WLC Global Challenge this year. Throughout the world there are countless challenges which extend from local to global levels. At HOBY, we hope that our alumni will meet those challenges head on with action based solutions and create a ripple effect of change. Ambassadors will engage in a series of mentored workshops to develop a sustainable organization, product, business, or service to take back home with them to meet a need that they have identieied. Ambassadors should consider any idea that will have a positive impact in their community, state, country or the world. The theme of the 2014 WLC is "It Starts Here." We are hoping that ambassadors will come to WLC with the early stages of an idea in mind. Anything that is important to you and will make positive change is a good place to start. After a series of guided development workshops and mentoring time all ambassadors will present a 1-‐2 minute idea “pitch” summarizing their organization, product, business, or service. This pitch should include a timeline of action and the purpose served by the developed idea. Start-‐up grants will be awarded to the top Ambassadors in order to put the ideas that started at WLC into action upon returning home. The goal of this project is to create a measurable ripple effect of change that will have started at the 2014 HOBY World Leadership Congress. Global Challenge Outstanding Project Selection Criteria 1.) Sustainability of the idea over time. 2.) Likelihood of impact on the people or community being served. 3.) Ability of the ambassador to share the details of their idea, event, business or organization with other people through a two minute spoken idea “pitch.” Global Challenge Phase and Award Notieication 1.) All ambassadors will present their two minute idea pitches to small groups of peers. 2.) One ambassador will be selected by peer vote from each small group (35 total) to present to a larger section group on Friday morningJuly 25th. 3.) From the top 35, seven will be selected as einalists to present to the entire World Leadership Congress as part of the WLC Global Challenge Showcase. “It Starts Here” On Social Media WLC will have a strong emphasis on social media during WLC. Times specieic to use social media are built into the program, known as a “Social Media Blitz”. You will have designated times to share your thoughts and excitement with the world and those around you. Ambassadors will receive their housing assignment at the WLC check-‐in at Mertz Hall. You will be assigned a roommate. No roommate requests will be allowed. We want you to meet as many new people as possible! Some other things to know about the dorms: • Phones: Rooms do not have active phones, but there are pay phones in the dorm and on campus. In the event of emergency, there are the HOBY ofeice phones. You may use a mobile phone, but we ask that you use it only in the dorms in the evening or morning. You will be permitted to use your phones/tablets during specieic designated sections of the program. • Linens/toiletries: The University will provide bed linens and a towel for you, but you may also wish to bring your own blanket/sleeping bag, pillow and towel/washcloth. Please observe all of the rules and respect the facilities. Please keep your keep your access card and HOBY nametag with you at all times. • Mail: I do not suggest sending mail or parcels to the campus because we are not permanent residents there and the staff will not have our rooming list until just a few days before the WLC. • Room checks and wake-‐up calls: To ensure a safe and timely event, our staff will physically conduct room checks each night and wake-‐up calls every morning. Ambassadors are expected to be in their rooms at this time. #WLC14 CHICAGO, IL The WLC World The WLC is a once-‐in-‐a-‐lifetime opportunity that is comprised of learning and leadership opportunities, days of inspiration, new found friends, and fun! A typical day at WLC includes a jam-‐packed day of substantive programming, including keynote speakers, panels, interactive activities, social activities, and group time. You will hear from world renowned speakers, challenge yourself to learn something new, and create lifetime memories. You will be part of a group of twelve student Ambassadors headed by an adult volunteer commonly known as a facilitator. Your facilitator will be in touch with you to welcome you to the WLC family before you depart your hometown. Your group will be joined by four others to form a section, which will be headed by a section leader. All together, there will be 35 groups divided into seven sections and 400 Ambassadors from around the globe. Program Highlights The HOBY Choir: At the end of the closing banquet, all WLC Ambassadors come together and sing for the volunteers, staff, and guests. Past WLC Ambassadors continually praise this activity as one of the most enjoyable. Even those of you who do not think you can carry a tune will be surprised at what a spectacular experience it is to sing with new friends from around the world, and I, for one, am eager to hear you. To prepare for this performance, there is a daily chorus practice. International Ambassador Presentation: Tuesday, July 22nd: If you are an International Ambassador representing a country other than the United States, please prepare to participate with the ambassadors from your country. There WILL NOT be time to prepare once you arrive in Chicago! At this event, every International Ambassador is encouraged to wear clothing or a costume that is representative of his or her country, and one person from each country will be called upon to share interesting facts and customs about their homeland, including school, education, industry, and/or business. Please plan your presentation; there is a strict 5 MINUTE maximum so we will have time to hear from all of our international friends. Talent Show: Thursday, July 24th: If you have a special talent – be it musical, athletic, dance, juggling, poetry, or whatever – please share your special skill with the rest of your new friends. If you need sheet music, instruments, CDs or props, be sure to bring them – and label them! If you bring music, it’s best to store it on a elash drive rather than in an iPod or other MP3 player. For more information about advance sign up for the talent see the talent show sign up form included with this information. There is overwhelming interest every year for the Talent Show with many amazing talents so not every interested Ambassador will get a spot in the show. Leadership for Service: During the WLC, all ambassadors participant in service activities throughout the Chicago area. There will be many details once you arrive in Chicago. Ambassadors will be required to wear closed-‐toe shoes, jeans, and a HOBY t-‐shirt on L4S day. Trading Pins/Souvenirs With 400 Ambassadors and 100 volunteer staffers, we will all want to meet each other. One thing we do to help break the ice and get everybody acquainted is to trade pins, buttons, bumper stickers, pencils, etc. during the week, especially on the eirst day. If you can, bring something from your country, state or hometown that you can trade with others and explain a little about yourself. Feel free to get creative; you can make something if you like. HOBY Homecoming -‐ A Closing Celebration to the WLC To celebrate the conclusion of the 2014 World Leadership Congress, HOBY will be hosting our closing banquet at Chicago’s historic Navy Pier. As a registered Ambassador, your Gala ticket is included in your registration fee, however, HOBY does have a limited number of additional tickets available for family and friends who wish to join us for this fun evening. Tickets are $85 each and can be purchased by logging back into your online registration/application OR at http://www.cvent.com/d/g4qx4v/4W. Plan to bring out your dressy clothes -‐-‐ suit/tie for gentlemen and dresses for ladies! The WLC World What to Wear/ Pack HOBY T-‐shirts EVERYDAY! Upon arrival, you can look forward to receiving several HOBY WLC T-‐shirts and a nametag, compliments of HOBY. It is very important you include a t-‐shirt size in your application. During the week, all students will wear one color and the staff will wear another color. In addition to eitting in with the rest of the group, wearing the WLC designated “T-‐shirt of the day” and a nametag will help us identify you immediately in any crowd, enhancing safety and security. Please plan to wear a HOBY T-‐shirt when traveling to Chicago if you have one, it will help us identify you at your entry-‐point. Clothing: Plan on most of your wardrobe needs simply being shorts (8” inseam or longer, no “short” shorts will be permitted), Capri pants, jeans, slacks or skirts to go with a HOBY T-‐shirt. A simple guideline for fashion is this: wear layers of clothing so you can take the top layer off when you are warm and put something on when you are cold. Because Chicago is likely to be hot, but the auditoriums where we will spend most of our days are air-‐conditioned, layers consisting of long sleeve shirts, cardigan sweaters, sweatshirts, light jackets, etc. are best. Footwear: Please do not wear sandals, elip-‐elops or shoes or heels that look great but give you blisters or slow you down on our frequent walks in the city. Comfortable, lightweight walking shoes with socks or sturdy/sport sandals are essential. Fashion Exceptions: • International Ambassador Presentation, Tuesday, July 22: If you are an International Ambassador, please prepare to participate. At this event, every international Ambassador is encouraged to wear traditional clothing or a costume that is representative of his or her country. • Community Service Day, Tuesday, July 22: One of the highlights of WLC is heading out into Chicago neighborhoods to participate in service-‐learning projects. Please bring a pair of comfortable jeans or lightweight pants that you don’t mind getting dirty, sneakers, a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses to wear while doing some hands-‐on work with other organizations for a few hours. • HOBY Homecoming, Friday, July 25: This celebratory event is a time for you to dress up (men in a coat and tie, women in dresses or dressy outeits). So don’t forget to pack your comfortable dress shoes! While it’s not “prom formal,” the event will have a festive atmosphere. What NOT to Wear The following attire is not permitted at any time: strapless/tube tops, tops with spaghetti straps, tank tops, bare midriffs, exposure of undergarments, short shorts, mini skirts, excessively tight clothing, clothing with profane or offensive language or graphics, torn clothing, transparent clothing, and clothing with holes. Don’t forget these important items: If You Bring It, Label It You’ll deeinitely want to bring a camera for the many special moments you’ll have. A hat and sunglasses will be helpful for our outdoor walking times. We will have little opportunity to shop, but feel free to bring some spending money if you are in the market for some HOBY or Loyola University Chicago souvenirs. You may want to bring a few other items from home; all we ask is that you use your discretion so that you are not stuck with something you truly do not need. If you bring it, be sure to label it. This will help tremendously if it winds up in the lost and found bin. Something you don’t need: your laptop computer. We simply won’t have any time for it, nor is there online access in the dorms. Personal electronic/communication devices (iPods, MP3 players, Cell phones, handheld video games, etc.) are not allowed to be used during scheduled conference functions. You may be instructed to use your cell phone, iPad, or tablet device during designated social media times built into the program. Please feel free to bring these along, but make sure you lable it! #myHO#BWYsLtoCr1y4 #WCHLCIC1A3G -O C,H ILICAGO Medical and Mental Health • Arrive well-‐rested and healthy! • HOBY Medics are part of the Ambassador Safety team at WLC. If deemed necessary, issues that require a physician will be handled by designated nearby hospitals. For this reason, please make sure your medical insurance information is completely accurate in your online application by July 9, if you have health insurance. It is also good to bring a copy of the insurance card or have an image of the front/back of the card saved on your phone. Emergency Contact Information Three days before the WLC, HOBY will set up telephone lines to its onsite operations ofeice. If an emergency arises at home, several key staff members at the WLC will be carrying cell phones and radios so we can contact you immediately.
