Preface
When I closed the 10th edition of ANABOLICS seven years ago, I wasn't sure when I'd be working on the book again. By that
point I had updated and expanded all of the drug profiles to a place I was happy with. Plus, the field of anabolic steroids is
a fairly static one. Not a lot changes with these substances. What I didn't foresee was just how much the market for
emerging drugs would grow ... how much people would embrace new alternatives to the old basics. Likewise, quite a lot
actually has happened in those seven years. This edition is about catching up.
In this new edition of ANABOLICS you'll find twenty new drug profiles. Several of these are SARMs (Selective Androgen
Receptor Modulators). For those unfamiliar, this is a new category of agents that act similar to anabolic steroids.They bind
the same receptor, and also support increased protein synthesis and muscle growth. However, most of these new drugs are
non-steroidal in structure. Further, they have a much stronger separation of anabolic and androgenic effect. While I do not
believe these agents are more powerful, risk-free, or poised to unseat steroids as the most common muscle-building drugs
out there, I will say that I believe there is something of substance here. Some SARMs have already been in human trials. I
suspect we will see a legitimate pharmaceutical product emerge from this category soon.
The category Peptides has seen even more expansion, and is a key focus of this new edition as well. These are largely drugs
that stimulate the release of growth hormone, or work through the wider GH axis in some way. We've had one new drug
approved in this class already (Egrifta), and several others have entered human clinical trials. I believe in here we may find
more than one cost-effective alternative to somatropin (recombinant growth hormone), and possibly a surprising novel
anabolic drug or two. As with SARMs, there is still much work to be done before this category matures. For now though,
we're digging into the data and empirical evidence with much interest.
Extremely personal to me, the research behind arachidonic acid (X-FACTOR™) took a big step forward in 2016. A second
clinical study was published, which found its supplementation to break training stagnation, and induce new size, strength,
and power gains in experienced athletes.Arachidonic acid is the body's most bioactive omega-6 fatty acid. It is richly stored
in the muscles, and necessary for triggering tissue inflammation and repair after training-induced damage. Its depletion
may be a key-contributing factor to declining gains over time. Similarly, its supplementation may be an effective way to
trigger new gains. Plateau is an especially common problem with experienced athletes. I believe my work in this area has
opened a wide door into our greater understanding and mitigation of it. I encourage you to take a look.
I've also cofounded Colorimetrics since the last update. This company manufactures ROIDTESTTM presumptive steroid test
kits. These kits verify the active drug in a product with a visual chemical reaction. While the technology cannot determine
the dosage yet, it does an incredible job of indicating if there is really oxandrolone in your Anavar, methenolone in your
Primobolan, etc. Drug substitution (or outright bunk product) is a major problem these days. The kits are fast, easy, and
finally give you the tools to do something about it. I can't emphasize how proud of this I am. I worked closely with the
research/production team, and helped facilitate the evolution of this technology to a point where it is exceedingly

This is also the first edition of ANABOLICS with contributing writers. I invited Willem Koert, Dr. Thomas O'Connor, Jake
Shelley, and Dr. George Touliatos to help expand the book with new sections and profiles. Each and all are exceedingly
smart and knowledgeable individuals, and added valuable and informed new perspectives to ANABOLICS. I hope you will
