(cid:1) A thriving commercial port up through Middle Ages until mid 1800’s. (cid:1) Late 19th century the harbour was dammed and reclaimed for agriculture. (cid:1) In 1910 a major storm eventually broke through the defences. (cid:1) Since then the harbour has not changed much from how you see it today. (cid:1) 1964 designated a Local Nature Reserve under the management of West Sussex County Council. (cid:1) 2012 RSPB took over day-to-day management of the reserve. (cid:1) Covers approx 1450 acres, half of which is intertidal saltmarsh habitat. (cid:1) Remainder consists of farmland, copses lagoons, reedbeds and shingle. (cid:1) SSSI, SPA and Ramsar Site. (cid:1) 2014 largest coastal re-alignment, RSPB Medmerry opened.
