Wilburwasbornon15October1910,inButialo,NewYork,attendedBloom- ingtonHighSchoolinIndiana,andreceivedanA.B.(1932)andM.A.(Botany, 1933)fromIndianaUniversityAfterearningaPh.D.fromDukeUniversityun- dertheforestecologistClarenceF.Korstianm1938,hebeganhisdistinguished forty-yearteachingandresearchcareerattheUniversityofGeorgia,Depart- mentofBotany(nowDepartmentofPlantBiology).Hewasalsocuratorofthe GAHerbariuin.Hisfacultypositionattheuniversitywasinterruptedbyfour yearsofserviceasFirstLieutenantandultimately,Major,intheU.S.Public HealthService(1943-1946)asanentomologistinchargeofmosquitocontrol forCharleston,SouthCarolina(andotherlocalesintheSoutheast)duringWorld WarII(Powell2005;Smith2005). WilburDuncanhadanillustriouscareerspanningsevendecadesduring whichhegenerouslysharedhisenthusiasmandexpertiseinbotanywithstu- dents,professionals,andamateursalike.Hewasdirectinimpartinginforma- tionintheclassroomsetting,butinthefieldhetookontheroleofgentleguide: hewouldaskquestionstohelpstudentsdiscovertheanswer,i.e.,to"see"the plantforthemselvesandtherebybettercommittheinformationtomemory. Wilburwasamega-collectorinthespiritolCyrusG.PringleandAlanH. Curtiss,collectingover30,000plantspecimensinhislifetime(inmultiplesets) thathedepositedatGAanddistributedtootherherbariathroughoutthesouth- easternUnitedStates(seeFig.2).Throughhiseflorts,theGAHerbariumgrew from16,000to135,000specimensduringhistenurethere.Amongthesespeci- mensishisfirst:acollectionofTrilliumsessile(Fig.3).Wilbur'sfield\vorl<in- cludedphotographingtheplants,aswellasmakingspecimensofthem.Ffispho- tographsemphasizedfeaturesneededforaccurateidentification—requiring,for example,illuminationoftheinsideofaLiriodendrontulipijera]^.flower(Dun- can&Duncan1988,p.151)ortheanthersofRhexiaalifanusWalter(Duncan& Duncan1987,p.106)viaaseriesofhomemadehandheldreflectors(L.Duncan, pers.comm.).HeevenflickeddropletsofwateronfloatingNymphaeaodorata Willd.leaves(Duncan&rDuncan1999,p.193)toprovidepropersizecontrast. Accordingtohismostrecentresumeonfileinourdepartment,Wilbur published65articlesinscientificjournals,mainlyonthefloristicsoftheSouth- east(e.g.,Duncan1954a,1964,1966a,1967,1969,1977,1979a;Duncanetal.1955, 1957),particularlyofGeorgia(e.g.,Duncan1948,1950a,1954b,1955,1957,1960, 1962a,1966b,1971,1979b,1984;Duncan&Blake1965;Duncan&Kartesz1981). Besidesfloristics,hisinterestsinthesespeciesrangedfromnomenclature(e.g., Duncan1950b),descriptionsofnewtaxa(Duncan1940,1944,1950c,1977;Dun- canetal.1971),morphology(e.g.,Duncan1933,1950d,1959a;Duncan&Brown 1954),tonaturalhistory(e.g.,Duncan1959b,1962b;Duncan&Dejong1964). Hisdiscoveryofanewrareoakspecies,QuercusoglcthorpcnsisW.H.Duncan (Oglethorpeoak;Duncan1940,1950e;Bishop&Duncan1941),inOglethorpe County,Georgia,wasthefirstnewoakfoundeastoftheMississippiin90years (summaryinCoder2003). TheUniversityofGeorgiaPresspublishedthreeplantidentiticationbooks authoredbyWilburduringhistenureasfacultymember:GuidetoGeorgiaTrees (Duncan1941),WoodyVinesoftheSoutheasternUnitedStates(Duncan1975), and WildflowersoftheSoutheasternUnitedStates(Duncan&Foote1975). InhisretirementWilburcontinuedtobeabotanicalresourcefortheGA Herbariumandtothemanystudentssharingspacewithhim,especiallythose involvedinfloristicstudiesfortheirdegrees.Whenstudentshaddilliculties identifyingaplant,theywouldfinallyconsultWilbur-whowouldabsentmind- edlyrattleoffaplantnamethatinevitablywascorrect,muchtotheamaze- mentof thestudents.Indeed,manywerethestudentssentbacl<totheirdesks mutteringastowhytheyhadn'tthoughtoftheanswerthemselves! ThelacuftyandstalfofourdepartmentwereimpressedtoobserveWilbur hereatworl<livedaysaweek(.andoftenalsoontheweekends),sittingupright at his microscope in "hiscoi'ner"orediting portionsof liis latest book iTianuscript(s).Whenmostolderfacultywerelookingforwardtoretirementas atimeofrestandpassagetootherareasofinterest,Wilburhadalreadybegun hissecondbotanicalcareerresultinginliiswell-writtenpopularfieldguides, beautifullyillustratedwithhisownphotographs.Hisbooksbroughtbotanyto inorepeopleatanunderstandablelevelthananyacademictext.Theseguides arecoauthoredbyhiswifeof64years,NiarionDuncan,alsoaprofessionalbota- nist.TheDuncansloggedover80,000milestogethercompilingthesefieldbooks ((McCarthy19W). Alwaysbusyin theherbariumandnattilydressedincoatandbowtie, Wilburwasanenviablemodelof atruebotanistdevotedtohiscraft.Hewas efficient,focused,anddirectwithanacuteattentiontodetail,coupledwitha notoriouslyunderstatedsenseofhumor1iepracticedtheartofseeingbeauty ineverythingandreadilysharedthisvisionwithothers.Asageandhealthis- suesencroachedonhisschedule,hewilledhimsefItocontinueuntilhisshrub bookwascompleted,atestamenttoliisstrengtholcharacterAndthelatter,he admitted,wasduetotheunec|uivocalstipportol hislox'ingwife,Marion,who washisbestfriend,fieldpartnerandconfidant.Wilburrefusedtoautograph copiesoftheirHeldguidesunlessMarionalsoprovidedhersignatureascoau- thorandpartnerHewasunstintinginhispraiseandrespectlorMarionasthe steadyfulcrumofhislifeandalsoneverfailedtoproudlydiscusshischildren andgrandchildren.Itisoltensaidofcertainpeoplethatweshallnotseetheir likeagain,andwhileperhapsaclicheintoday'sworld,thestatementholdsa hightimbrelorthelilcolWilburII.13uncan.
