Chapter 1: Wicca and the Moon To understand Wiccan Moon Magic, one must first understand Wicca. At its core, it is an earth-based religion that worships nature alongside both a Goddess and a God. Wiccans believe all thing in nature are filled with magic and Divine power. Every tree, rock, star, and drop of water are part of the Divine, as are humans and animals. But in all the natural world, nothing holds as much Divine energy as both the Sun and the Moon. Wiccans view the Sun as the embodiment of their God. It does not matter what name they apply to Him or what form He takes. The Sun is His emblem. It shines with His light and brings the heat of His energy into our lives. The Moon is the opposite side of the coin. She represents the Goddess and Her calm, soothing energy. As the Moon waxes and wanes, it represents different aspects of the Goddess. And this is because the Wiccan Goddess has three aspects: The Maiden, The Mother, and the Crone. These three aspects – which are referred to as the Triple Goddess or the Three-Faced Goddess when spoken of collectively – are a common motif in Wiccan practices. She is represented in everything from the phase of the Moon to the changing of the seasons. But the Moon and the Triple Goddess are far more than just representations. Many Wiccan rituals call on the power the Goddess and the Moon. Female practitioners perform rites to connect with the Moon’s energy. And all Wiccans, no matter their gender, incorporate the Moon and Her energy into spells and rituals. Wiccans seek balance in all things. Light to dark, warm to cold, life to death. But even though they seek balance, the Moon is such a prevalent symbol that it appears much more often than the Sun. Triple Goddess pendants are one of the most identifiable Wiccan icons. The History of Moon Worship The practice of Moon worship goes back much further than the current incarnation of Wicca. Wicca, as it stands today, was created in 1954 by Gerald Gardner. And though Gardner created the modern Wiccan religion, he rooted it in English and Irish beliefs that predated the presence of Christians on either island. Moon worship has existed across cultures and continents for millennia. It has likely existed since humans first looked up at the Moon and felt the same awe that people still feel when they gaze up at Her today. But Gardner modeled Wicca largely on the practices of the ancient English, Welsh, Scottish, and Irish. This makes sense, given that Gardner himself was British. Unfortunately, many of the pre-Christian religious rites in both Britain and Ireland have been lost over time. This was, in part, due to intentional action by Christian conquerors that invaded the islands long ago. Many pre- Christian traditions were seen as threats to the power of the Catholic church. In order to remove the threat, Catholic conquerors outlawed most of the practices. This was not restricted to Britain and Ireland, of course. It was the standard practice of the day. As Bishop Elegius of Noyon, in what is now present-day Western Europe said in a sermon, “Let no Christian take note… of the Moon, before commencing any work.” Elegius went on to say that people should no longer “shout at eclipses” nor refer to the Sun and Moon as Lords or make oaths using their names. Elegius railed against many things in that same sermon. But none appeared as
