Preface
The publication of Volume IX of Who Was
Who in America is an important step forward in
the growth of a series of biographical reference
books that seek to reflect both American history
and the genealogical heritages of this country. The
sketches are of deceased biographees in Who’s Who
in America as well as our regional and topical library.
The Was books (to use the shortened form by
which they are better known) display the
distinctive characteristics that have made Who’s
Who in America both an internationally respected
reference work, and a household word in the
country of its origin. Sketches not only were
prepared by information supplied by the
biographees themselves, but were approved and
frequently revised by the subjects before being
printed in a Marquis publication. As a result,
many sketches contain personal data unavailable
elsewhere. The preface to the first volume of
Who’s Who in America selected this fact as one of
the volume's outstanding characteristics, and
stated: "The book is autobiographical, the data
having been obtained from first hands." Similarly,
Who Was Who in America is largely autobio-
graphical. Although condensed to the concise style
that Marquis Who's Who has made famous,
the sketches contain essential facts. Inclusion of
date of death and place of interment completes
the sketches.
In continuing improvements introduced in previous
volumes of Who Was Who in America, this
volume includes sketches of some Marquis
biographees known to be 95 years of age or older.
Lacking current information regarding these
individuals, we make such inclusions in the hope
that our apologies will be accepted should errors
occur. Sketches of recently deceased world
notables also are included, particularly of those
international figures whose careers had a direct
bearing on the course of recent American history.
The result is far more than a biographical
directory of some 117,000 deceased American
notables within the covers of nine volumes. Who
Was Who in America contains a vital portion of
American history from the early days of the
colonies to mid-1989. It is the autobiography of
America.
