WHITNEY ANCESTRY — Royal Pedigree of John Whitney of Watertown, Mass. Compiled by Don Dyson Worth, 1996 Whitney Ancestry Page 2 Whitney Ancestry First Generation 1 John Whitney. Born 159231 in Westminster (London), England. Christen 20 Jul 159233 in England. Died 1 Jun 167531 in Watertown, Mass. Occupation Landowner, emigrant. In his youth, John was apprenticed to William Pring, who was a freeman of the Merchant Tailor’s Company, then the most famous and prosperous of all the great trade guilds. On 13 March, 1614 John was admitted as a full-fledged member. John lived for some years at Isleworth, seven miles up river from London, and moved back to London for the years immediately preceding his emigration to the Americas. In April 1635, he and his family set sail on the “Elizabeth and Ann” for the Massachusetts Bay Colony, arriving in Watertown in June of 1635. They settled there on 16 acres of land and eventually held 198 acres. He became a freeman of the colony on March 3, 1635/ 6; was appointed Constable of Watertown on June 1, 1641; and was Selectman from 1638 to 1665; and was Town Clerk in 1655.31 Research: Mackenzie states his death year as 1673.50 He married Elinor, in England. A “Gentleman of Lambeth Marsh”31 Research: Henry Melville lists Thomas and Mary’s children as: Margaret, Thomas, Henry, Arnwaye, JOHN, Nowell, Frances, Mary, and Robert. Of these only three survived childhood: John, Francis (d. 1643, Westminster), and Robert (d. 1662, Cornhill, London).31 He married Mary Bray, 12 May 1583 in England. 3 Mary Bray. Born in England. He married Elizabeth Guillims (or Duglim). 5 Elizabeth Guillims (or Duglim). Research: Her maiden name is given as Morgan in Americans of Royal Descent.130 6 John Bray. Died 1615. Page 5 Whitney Ancestry Fourth Generation 8 Robert Whitney (Sir). Born in England. Died 5 Aug 156761 in England. He was knighted the day after Queen Mary’s coronation on October 2, 1553. He was summoned before the Privy Council in 1555 and 1559 and was a member of Parliament for Hertfordshire in 1559.61 He married Sybil Baskerville. 9 Sybil Baskerville. Robert was from Icomb and had charge of other confiscated estates. He was Sheriff of Gloucestershire (1527-30); was nominated Knight of the Bath by Henry VIII at the coronation of Anne Boleyn in 1531; he received a grant of part of the income of the monastery of Brewern in 1535; he furnished 40 men to help put down the rebellion of 1536; and was named to attend upon the king’s person.61 Research: His will was proved 11 June 1541.61 He married Margaret Wye. 17 Margaret Wye. 18 James Baskerville (Sir). James was appointed receiver for Newport (in the marches), part of the estate of the Duke of Buckingham, which was confiscated by Henry VII in 1522.61 He married Blanche Milbourne. 33 Blanche Milbourne. 36 Walter Baskerville (Sir). Knight of Eardisley.61 He was Sheriff of Herefordshire, and Knight of Bath in 1501.61 He married Anne. 37 Anne. Daughter of Morgan ap Jenkyn ap Philipp of Pencoyd.61 38 John Breynton. An active participant of the War of the Roses, Robert was probably a knight at the battle of Mortimer’s Cross in 1461 on the side of the Yorkists. On the occasion of his marriage to his first wife, Alice, he was the subject of a poem by Lewis Glyn Cothi.61 He married Constance Touchett. 65 Constance Touchett. Constance was a descendant of William the Conqueror through the second wife of Edward I.61 66 Simon Milbourne. He married Jane Baskerville. 67 Jane Baskerville. Daughter of Sir Ralph Baskerville, of Hereford, who was of Royal Descent.130 72 James Baskerville (Sir). Knight of Eardisley. He was several times Sheriff of Herefordshire and was Knight Banneret on the battlefield of Stoke in 1487 and Knight of the Bath at the coronation of Henry VII.61 He married Katherine (or Sybil) Devereaux. 73 Katherine (or Sybil)139 Devereaux. Page 9 Whitney Ancestry Eighth Generation 128 Eustace de Whitney (Sir). Born 141161. Sir Eustace was head of a commission sent to Wales by Henry VI in 1455 and was a member of parliament for Hertfordshire in 1468.61 He married Jenett Russell. 129 Jenett Russell. 132 John Milbourne (Sir). He married Elizabeth Devereux. 133 Elizabeth Devereux. 134 Ralph Baskerville (Sir). Of Erdisley, Hereford.139 He married Anne Blaket. 135 Anne Blaket. 146 Walter Devereaux (Sir).
