Dedication A Tribute . . . In Memoriam . . When I remember Mrs. Lucier, I think of a person who enjoyed life to the fullest. Long before she even knew of her illness, she was determined to savor every moment, every experience that she had. As a result, Mrs. Lucier was unwilling to ever let anything get her down. In fact, she did her best to see that everyone around her was always upbeat, be it her family, her friends and colleagues, or her students. Even duringherillness, whenreceiv- ingcallsand/orvisits fromfamily andfriends, she refused to dwell on her illness and would immediately switch the conversation to the well-being ofothers. I shall always remember and admire her courage during this most difficult time. Nor was her concern for others surprising, because that had always been evident to those of us who were so fortunate as to be her colleagues and friends. From the first day I arrived at Whitman-Hanson, it was Mrs. Lucierwho came up to me, introducedherself and took it upon herself to "show me the Mrs. Karen S. Lucier ropes." First, as amentor, then asacolleague, and soon as a very special friend, Mrs. Lucier became the best personal support system that one could ever have. To know Mrs. Lucier, was to appreciate this caring for others and also to be treated to a remarkable sense of humor. Mrs. Lucier was agreat person tobearoundbecauseofherwit. Mrs. Karen S. Summer is something different for everyone. For some, summer meansworkingdaysorworkingnights. For most people, summer means sleeping late, short days, and long nights. Thedaytimeis spent at the beach with friends and family. Summer is vacationing with friends and family. Summerisan opportunitytoenrich old friendships and to set foundations for new ones. Summer is a time for going to concerts, trying new experiences, and driv- ing aimlessly about looking for excitement in everything. Summer is a time for testing the limits of one's own freedom and the time to test the limits of one's parents. Summer is the only time ofthe year that is one's own.
