Laurie Etheridge takes a last look at her Nutrition test before turning it in to her instructor. n the morning of Wednesday, August 26, the skies were gray and gloomy. A storm named Andrew was on its way to Southwest Mississippi after slamming through Florida and leaving a path of destruction. SMCC cancelled classes for the day as high winds, heavy rain, and accompanying tornadoes threatened everyone's safety. The area escaped major damage but became a refuge for hundreds of people running from danger. Then .. . the skies cleared and regular activities resumed. Not even a killer storm could halt us for long from getting on with the work we had to do. Cheerleader sponsor Maxine Bierbaum greets fans at the gate of the football stadium with a smile and a program. 2 Power company workers repair the damage left by Hurricane Andrew. Students got a rare day off because of the storm. During the first assembly program of the year, the cheerleaders are introduced and go through a routine they learned at camp. Todd Stewart and Ben Caston return for their sophomore year ready to work and maybe find time for a little play. 3 Kim Kinslow begins a painting in art class. Many students had their projects displayed in the entry way of the library. Miss Ginn and James Bickham switch roles as he instructs her on the computer. Jim Price reviews his economic test as Mrs. Brister calls out the right answers. 4 The library provides a quiet place to study with a friend or alone. hen the storm was over, our spirits lifted as the dark clouds disappeared and the sky opened up again. We got back on track with our goals and realized the possibilities were limitless. We accepted challenges, developed new friendships, played games, carried on traditions, and made lots of memories. For all of us, the opportunities were there because at SMCC, the sky's the limit. The brick wall outside the Humanities building offers a nice place to sit and take in the sunshine between classes.
