Forthescientificallyinclined,onesolutiontothisdilemmaistobewell trainedinthemethodsofprobabilityandstatistics,whichcanthenbeapplied toabroadrangeofsubjects.Icametothissolutionneitherdeliberatelynor immediately,butgraduallyandbyaccident.IncollegeItookmanyenlight- eningcoursesinanthropology,followedbydemography.Takingtheminthis order,Isawwithfascinationhowregularitiesemergedfromthemostindivid- ualisticbehaviorswhensocietieswerestudiedenmasse.ThenIsawthatthe samewastrueinbiology:thelawsofprobabilitycouldsummarizeandpre- dictphenomenaasdiverseaspopulationgeneticsandreactionstomedicines. Economics,physics,geology,psychology—everywhereyoulookedprobabil- itymathematicswasausefultoolandcontributedsomethingimportantto humanunderstanding.
