E M O C L E W Landmarks are very useful things - monuments to power, status symbols and emblems of civic pride. Local ones tell you how near you are to home and they are also invaluable for guiding confused tourists to where exactly they need to get to. And plans are afoot for an imposing new structure. The Gateway landmark at Chiswick roundabout is inching slowly to fruition, with new proposals due before the planning committee in early 2010.For some, modern architecture is the spawn of the devil,a blot on the landscape,a ghastly carbuncle. The Chiswick building was designed by ‘Gherkin’architect Ken Shuttleworth and already denounced as a “massive octopus” structure by one local resident.Well, everyone’s a critic. To me,it looks like an alien from Dr.Who and this is the fun aspect of landmarks in that we can all let our imagination run wild with flights of fancy, some with a Freudian twist.I’m not sure who first said that landmarks were phallic symbols: some definitely are such as the Post Office Tower but the proposed one at Chiswick roundabout seems more gender confused. After all,who can guess at the precise sex of aliens? And last but not least, congratulations to Thomas Pryde from Belmont Primary school in Chiswick. The seven-year-old has won the Marmalade Christmas Card competition, beating off over 70 entries.Well done,Thomas!
