W_Jan eds letter.qxp 06/01/2009 13:27 Page 1 R E T T E L S ’ R O T I D E I n a bid to do something that resembles ‘a new resolution’,I’ve decided to do one thing every month which the 2008 me would never have done. This month, I’m having a personal training session at the Hogarth Club in W4 (do read our fantastic profile of the Hogarth and its sister club, the Park Club).I’m sure it won’t be as blissful as scoffing the last of the champagne and chocolate, but tough; this year,my objective is to do things that take me out of my comfort zone – to use hearty fitness parlance. Indeed, when I met our cover star,Pete Reed, hearing tales of his gruelling workouts which propelled him to the Beijing Olympics really put me to shame. The thought of sitting on the rowing machine for an hour or two then bench-pressing 130kg would have made the old me just huddle on the sofa with a large box of Malteasers, but it spurred the new 2009 me on to swim,oh,another two lengths at my local pool. Of course, there’s the flipside to the ‘new year, new you’ coin; why not just carry on as normal? Our second profile this month, the author,Hanif Kureishi,is one such man who doesn’t care a jot about what other people think about him or the way he lives his life which I also admire. This is the man who wrote The Mother, where a horrified audience watched a young Daniel Craig disporting in the altogether with 68-year-old and Dinner Ladiesstar,Anne Reid in the film adaptation.Kureishi’s new book Something to Tell You is out now; buy it and see what you think. He won’t mind either way. Anyway, whether you decide to go out and conquer the ski slopes (and if you do,check out our ski style shopping feature),treadmill or local park,or whether you sit resolutely on the sofa savouring the last of the mince pies, do enter our fantastic competition with the Aqua Sculpture Day Spa in W6.You and a friend can win a heavenly body wrap and mini facial which will leave you feeling slimmer and radiant – it’s a great way to start the year! Have a good month.
