AdjustingMemory Resources OneissuethatcanaffectFMEperformancewhenyou'reworkingwithverylargedatasetsisavailableRAM.Ifyourunaverylargedataset throughaworkspace,youmayseeamessageboxthatsays“OutofMemory.Pleasefreesomememory,thenchooseretry.”Whatthismeansis thatnomorememorycanbeallocated.Youcantrythefollowingoptions: n Ifyouhave4GBofRAM(availableinversionFME2006GBandabove),youcantryturningonthe3GBswitch. n YoucanalsorefertothehintsinPerformanceTuningFME. Usingthe /3GBSwitch Note:The/3GBswitchisnotrequiredforall,orevenmost,usersofFME.The/3GBswitchwillonlybenefitthosewhorequiretranslations thatwillnotcurrentlyrunwith2GBofaddressablememory. Thirty-two-bitversionsoftheWindowsoperatingsystemcanmanageamaximumof4GBofaddressablememory.The4GBisdividedinto2GB foruserapplicationsand2GBforkernelprocesses.Thismeansthatanygivenapplicationisrestrictedto2GBofmemory. Settingthe Temporary Directory WhenFMErunsalarge,multi-datasettranslation,itoftenrequiresalotoftemporarydiskspace.ThisisparticularlytruewhenrunningaData- setFanout,becausethereisnoguaranteethatthefeatureswillarriveatthefanoutinasingledatasetgroup.Therefore,FMEhastowriteoutall ofthedatasetstotemporarystorage,andthenfanthemoutafterwards.Sotheamountofavailablediskspaceisimportant,butonaper- formanceissueyoumightbemoreconcernedaboutthespeedofallthisdiskactivity. Don'tsetyourtemporarydirectoryonthesamediskthattheoperatingsystemuses;FMEmightbesloweddownbytheoperatingsystem writingtothesamediskatthesametime. Trytosetthetemporarydirectorytoadiskthathasalargeamountoffreespace-itwon'timprovethespeedbutitmaypreventalarge translationfromfailingduetoalackofdiskspace. PurgingTemporary Files SometimesFMEcreatestemporaryfilesthatcantakeupunnecessarydiskspace(forexample,stoppingatranslationwillcausethesefilesto buildup). It’sagoodideatoperiodicallypurgethesefilesbyselectingTools>PurgeTemporaryFiles. StartingFMEWorkbench FindFME DesktopintheAllProgramsareaoftheWindowsstartmenu.ClickFME Workbenchinthesubmenu. Notethat,dependingonyourversionofWindows,theStartmenuconfigurationmightlookslightlydifferent.
