File Management

upwindow.
YoucanalsotheviewsourceanddestinationformatintwoadditionalcolumnsinWindowsExplorer:
1. OpenWindowsExplorer,andgotothedirectorythatcontainsyourFMEfiles.
2. Right-clickonanexistingcolumnheadingtodisplaythecommandmenu,andselectMore.
3. ScrolldownandchecktheboxeslabelledReadersandWriters.
4. ClickOKtodisplaythecolumnsinWindowsExplorer.
NOTE:YouwillhavetorepeatthesestepsforeachdirectorythatyouwanttodisplaytheReadersandWriterscolumns.
DaylightSavingsTime
FME’sperformanceisnotaffectedinanywaybychangesinlocaltimezonesrelatedtodaylightsavings,orbyextensionstothenumberof
weeksofdaylightsavingstime,aslongasyourcomputer’sclockhasbeensettoautomaticallyadjustfordaylightsavingchanges.
UsersrunningFMEonaWindowsoperatingsystemcancheckthisoptionhasbeenselectedbyopeningtheirControlPanel,selectingDateand
Timeoptions,thenselectingtheTimeZonetab.
AdjustingMemory Resources
OneissuethatcanaffectFMEperformancewhenyou'reworkingwithverylargedatasetsisavailableRAM.Ifyourunaverylargedataset
throughaworkspace,youmayseeamessageboxthatsays“OutofMemory.Pleasefreesomememory,thenchooseretry.”Whatthismeansis
thatnomorememorycanbeallocated.Youcantrythefollowingoptions:
n Ifyouhave4GBofRAM(availableinversionFME2006GBandabove),youcantryturningonthe3GBswitch.
n YoucanalsorefertothehintsinPerformanceTuningFME.
Usingthe /3GBSwitch
Note:The/3GBswitchisnotrequiredforall,orevenmost,usersofFME.The/3GBswitchwillonlybenefitthosewhorequiretranslations
thatwillnotcurrentlyrunwith2GBofaddressablememory.
Thirty-two-bitversionsoftheWindowsoperatingsystemcanmanageamaximumof4GBofaddressablememory.The4GBisdividedinto2GB
foruserapplicationsand2GBforkernelprocesses.Thismeansthatanygivenapplicationisrestrictedto2GBofmemory.
BeginningwithFME2006GB,FMEtakesadvantageofa/3GBswitchwhichcausestheoperatingsystemtodividetheavailable4GBofmemory
into3GBforuserapplicationsand1GBforkernelprocesses.Manytranslationsthatpreviouslyfailedduetomemorylimitationswillnowrunsuc-
cessfullywhenthe/3GBswitchisused.

How doI turn on the 3GBSwitch?
BeforeFMEcanusethe/3GBswitch,youwillneedtoedityoursystem’sboot.inifile.
Youcanaccessthisfilebydoingthefollowing:
1. OpentheSystemPropertiesdialog.YoucanaccessthisdialogbyeitheropeningControlPanelandselectingSystem,orbyright-clicking
onMyComputerandselectingproperties.
2. SelecttheAdvancedtabatthetopoftheSystemPropertiesdialog.
3. ClicktheSettingsbuttonunderStartupandRecovery.
4. ClicktheEditbuttonunderSystemstartup.Notepadwillopenwiththeboot.inifile.
Under[operatingsystems],thereshouldbealinethatendswith/fastdetect.Add/3GBtotheendofthisline.

Itdoesn'tneedto!For64-bitversionsofwindows,FMEcantakeadvantageof4GBofaddressablememory.IfyouarerunningFMEona64-bit
versionofWindows,nofurtheractionisrequired.Translationsthatpreviouslyfailedbecauseoflimitedmemoryshouldnowwork.

Settingthe Temporary Directory
WhenFMErunsalarge,multi-datasettranslation,itoftenrequiresalotoftemporarydiskspace.ThisisparticularlytruewhenrunningaData-
setFanout,becausethereisnoguaranteethatthefeatureswillarriveatthefanoutinasingledatasetgroup.Therefore,FMEhastowriteoutall
ofthedatasetstotemporarystorage,andthenfanthemoutafterwards.Sotheamountofavailablediskspaceisimportant,butonaper-
formanceissueyoumightbemoreconcernedaboutthespeedofallthisdiskactivity.
Wherepossible,setyourtemporarydirectorytopointtothefastestdiskyouhaveavailable.ThisFAQtellsyouhowtouseFME_TEMPto
setadifferenttemporarydirectory.
Don'tsetyourtemporarydirectoryonthesamediskthattheoperatingsystemuses;FMEmightbesloweddownbytheoperatingsystem
writingtothesamediskatthesametime.
Trytosetthetemporarydirectorytoadiskthathasalargeamountoffreespace-itwon'timprovethespeedbutitmaypreventalarge
translationfromfailingduetoalackofdiskspace.
PurgingTemporary Files
SometimesFMEcreatestemporaryfilesthatcantakeupunnecessarydiskspace(forexample,stoppingatranslationwillcausethesefilesto
buildup).
It’sagoodideatoperiodicallypurgethesefilesbyselectingTools>PurgeTemporaryFiles.
StartingFMEWorkbench
FindFME DesktopintheAllProgramsareaoftheWindowsstartmenu.ClickFME Workbenchinthesubmenu.
Notethat,dependingonyourversionofWindows,theStartmenuconfigurationmightlookslightlydifferent.
