McCarthy Jim Spillane Philip Williams EDITORS' NOTE Many borders havebeen challenged in our recenthistory. As we look around it is evident that ourpopulations havebecome more varied. The community created at our university is representative of one such population. Walking around the corridors we see andhear a weaving ofcultures. We find ourselves in a borderland. Last year the literary arts journal began a transformation to becomemore representative ofourUMBcommunity. Changing the name to The Watermark, a name which invites multiple meanings, was a first step. Since early in the fall semester our staffhas visited classrooms and clubs across campus in an effort to gather work from our many voices. These efforts are realized in the pages of this journal. We are excited to have received so — many diverse submissions artwork in various media and styles; translations of poems; writing that challenges conventions. Of course, this made the selection process more difficult. We receive approximately sevenhundred submissions annually and reducingthatnumbertoajournalofjustoverone hundred pagesis anenormous task. Sometimes itmeans lettinggo of a piece we love due to lack of space. Our collaborative efforts donot always come easy, nor are we always in complete agreement. In order to gain multiple perspectives, each piece is considered by several people with selected pieces moving on to second and third rounds. Finalselections are made duringa meeting atwhich we discuss, argue, and at lastcome to decide on which pieces will be included in the pages of The Watermark. Not every piece will appeal to everyone, but most will find pages to enjoy. And we hope the diversity represented in these pages willencourage future submissions. Withoutyour submissions, wecouldnothaveajournal. Furtherencouragement comes by way of the Lillian Lorraine Jones Memorial Prize. UMB LillianJones died in 1986, duringher second year at and the prize was established by Lillian's mother. This year's prize goes to P.H. Allioth for "Pearl of the Antilles/' a social commentary — which crosses borders betweennon-fiction and fiction, prose and poetry. Finally comes the task of thanking people. Of course there's Donna Neal, our trusty advisor; Dave Bufano for his input; Vivian Zamel, Ellie Kutz, and Neal Bruss for their patient listening; and Martha Collins and Lloyd Schwartz for their technical advice and caring. We would like to acknowledge the support of the Art and English Departments, Creative Writing, the Offices of the Chancellor and Provost, the Mass Media, the Student Senate, Yearbook, Wit's End Cafe, the Campus Players, and the Harbor Art Gallery. And a round of applause to Stan Kaplan whose expertise in production has made the final productpossible. — MD JRLand About The Watermark The Watermarkpublishesitssecondvolumethisyearhavingsucceeded Howth Castleand Wavelength as UMass Boston sjournal ofthe arts.
