The Boer republics lacked a regular army and were campaign outnumbered by the forces of Britain and the Empire. It appeared that the Boer ‘rabble of farmers’ would be easily defeated. BRITISH SOLDIERS In 1899, most British soldiers were volunteers. Many soldiers had military experience in far-flung parts of the Empire and their equipment reflected this.
