In1985,hewaspresidentoftheemployee'sQuarterCenturyClub intheclub's50thyear. Inhisyoungerdaysheserved4yearsintheCanadianMilitia(SignalCorps)attainingtherankofsergeant. Hewasalsoa memberoftheMasonicOrderwherehebecameaMasterMason. UntilmovingtoBrampton,JimwasavolunteerforseveralyearsintheIntensiveCare UnitoftheQueenswayGeneralHospitalnearhishomeinEtobicoke. InBrampton,hedidvolunteerworkforPeelHospiceforawhileandlater completeda3-yeartermontheBoardofDirectorsfortheCondobuildingwherehepresentlyresides. Heenjoyshiscomputerandemailcontactsashe searchesthe'net'whileworkingonhisfamilygenealogyresearchprojects. AshealthproblemsbegantodevelopforbothJimandhiswifeIsabell,homemaintenancebecameincreasinglydifficult. Thelogicalalternativewasthe salein1995,ofthelong-timehomeinEtobicokeandthenamovetoaCondominiumapartmentinBramptontobeneartheirthreemarrieddaughters. Unfortunately,Isabelldiedfromtheeffectsofpancreaticandbreastcancerjustafewshortmonthsaftertheymovedin. In1996hemetFlorence,a widow,whowasalsoaresidentinthebuilding. Theyweremarried23August1997,bya"J.P."FrankRussell,inaprivateceremonyheldintheparty roomofthebuildinginthepresenceofallmembersofbothfamilies,includingtheircombined11grandchildren. Isabelllovedtoplaycardsandboardgameswithherdaughtersandgrandchildrenanddidsowithanenjoymentandintensity levelthatwashardtobelieve. Developinghealth problemsforcedthesaleofthelong-timehomeinEtobicokeandamovetoacondominiumapartmentinBramptoninMayof1995. Shedidn'thavelong toenjoyit,asjustafewmonthslaterinDecember,IsabelldiedintheCreditValleyHospital,Mississauga,Ontario,afteralengthy3-yearbattlewith pancreaticandbreastcancer. Hisconditionworsenedto thepointthatitbecamenecessaryforhimtohaveround-the-clockcareinaChildren'sHospitalinOrillia. Justafterhis7th birthday,hediedinhospitalwhenhefailedtorecoverfromaseizure. However,partofRussellliveson. Itwasarrangedtohavehiscorneastransplanted. Wesubsequentlylearnedthatone corneawenttoablindtypist,(wholaterwroteusaletter),andtheotherwenttoacarpenterwhohadlosthissightinan industrialaccident. 16March2008 Page1 F iii. Asateenager,Arleneachievedthe"CanadaCord",(thenthehighestawardattainableintheGirlGuideMovement). She madethe"Dean'sList"andgraduatedwithHonoursfromRyersonUniversityinTorontowithaBachelorofBusiness ManagementDegree. Arleneenjoyssingingandherchoiractivitiesandatthiswritingisthelongestservingmemberof herchurchchoir. Shehasbeencalleduponasasoloistatweddings(includingthoseofbothhersisters.) Arleneandher futurehusbandGrahamfirstmetintheirteenageyears,whenaspartoftheirrespectiveGuideandScouttroops,they bothhappenedtobeworkingonthesamerenovationprojectatadistrictsummercamp. Heisfoundonthe1901censusat"LittleCamoquhill"withhisparentsand6sistersiblingsthenstillathome. (Histhreeolderbrothershadalreadyleft). MyfatherfirstcametoCanadaabout1905andaftertworeturntripstoScotland,heimmigratedtostayin1909andtraveledaroundtheprairiesdoing farmwork. Heispickeduponthe1911censusonafarmnearRegina. Itisbelievedthatitwasaroundthistimewhenhefirstmetmymother. Shehad beenvisitinghersisterClaraandherhusbandBobFogalontheirfarmnearLaflechewhendadcamecallinglookingforwork. It'snotknownhowlong hestayed,butobviouslyhekeptintouchwithmymother. ItisknowntheymetagainintheMontrealareawhereMomworkedforawhilebeforedad wentwestagain. EventuallytheywoundupinToronto,marriedandsettledtostay.Dadoncetoldmeabouthisexperiencesononeofhistripshome. Aftersayinghellotohismother,hewenttothebarnwherehisfatherwasharnessingahorse. Whenhecalledoutagreeting,thestrangevoicestartled thehorsethatthenkickedoutandbrokehisfather'sleg. Dad'shomecomingwasthenextendeduntilhisfathercouldmanageonhisown. OncesettledinToronto,heworkedfirstasateamsterforHendriecartage,thenthefreightagentforCNRailways. Althoughtheuseoftruckswas increasing,horseswerestillamajorformoftransportbeforeWWII. TheTorontoharbourwouldoftenfreezehardinthewinterandDadsometimesdrove ateamandsleighwithsuppliesacrosstheicetotheTorontoIslandswhereasizablenumberofpeoplethenlivedyear-round. Welivedinacompany flatat#5PeterStreetnextdoortohisworklocation,onthenorth-eastcornerofPeterandFrontstreetsacrossfromwheretheRogersSky-Domeis today. Aspartofhisrentalarrangementforthecompanyflat,Dadwasrequiredtohelpfeedandwaterthehorsesonweekends. However,afterawork relatedinjuryin1936,(hisfirstbrokenleg),hewasletgo. (Thesewerethe"depression"pre-waryearsandtherewerenounionsinthosedaystoprotect theworkers'interests). Dadlaterbecameashipper-receiverforatruckingcompanyspecializinginmovingmachineryandotherheavyequipment. Itwashardphysicalwork andonceagain,employmentinjuriestooktheirtoll. Hesufferedseveralseriousaccidentsincludinghavingbothlegsbroken,oneforthesecondtime. Theseinjurieslaterdevelopedintoseverearthritisleavinghimvirtuallyimmobileinhislateryears. Hisfirstlegoperationhadbeen"botched"andlater requiredanotheroperationthatinturn,lefthimwithapermanentlimp. TheEmploymentCompensationBoardawardedhimagenerous(?)"Life-time" pensionof$5.00amonth. Buthewasatougholdbirdandwhenhelivedlongerthantheyexpected,theBoard"signedhimoff"withalumpsum paymentof$250.00onhis75thbirthday. Hehadtaughthimselftoplaythe"squeezebox",asmallaccordionhehadbroughtwithhimfromScotland. It wascertainlyalife-timeofenjoymentforhimoverthemilesandyears. Asthefabricdriedoutandtheseamssplit,hepatcheditwithtapetokeepit goingmuchtothedelightofhisgranddaughterBarbarawhoalwayspressuredhimtoplayitforher. Oneeveninginhissleep,helapsedintoacomafromwhichheneverregainedconsciousness. Movedtoahospital,hediedtherepeacefullyabouta weeklater. ItisnowknownhisparentsweremarriedonDecember11,1876 inAlloa,Clackmannanshire,andnotintheDenny/BalfronareaofStirlingshirewherebothfamiliesthenfarmedand resided. Withthepassingoftimeandthepeopleinvolved,thedetailsofhisbirtharenolongerimportantexceptforthis record. However,forthetimesitlikelydistressedboththeWaddellandEadiefamilies. Incorrectinformationabouthis ageevenappearedonthe1881Britishcensus,andwhetherornotthiswasunintendedoranattempttohidehisbirth detailsisnotnowknown. Certainly,the1881censuslistsArchieasborninBothkennar,whilehisbirthextract,reference "Birth145.jpg",registershiminBannockburn. Hewasalsoshownasayoungerthird-bornchild,insteadofbeingthefirst- borninthefamilyashewasknowntobe. (IclearlyrecallmyfatherreferringtoArchieashisoldestbrother). Thelater 1891censustakenat"NorthFieldFarm",Dunipace,Stirlingcorrectsthisandgiveshisageas"15"which,equateswith hisknownbirthyearof1876. ThiscensuslistsArchibald(andhisyoungerbrotherJohn),asthenlivingwithhis GrandmotherMargaretEadie'sfamily. Hewasnotfoundonthe1901Scottishcensusandmayhavebeenonhiswayto Canadaatthattime. Whetherornotitwasbecauseofhisbirthsituation,orsomethingelsewillneverbeknown,butalife-longanimosity reportedlydevelopedbetweenArchieandhisfather. Archieisknowntohaveexpressedthesentimentthat"hedidn't reallyfeelhewasamemberofthefamily." Perhapsbecauseofthis,hewasalsothefirstoffourbrothersinthefamilyto immigratetoCanada. HestruckoutonhisownatanearlyagebytakingpassagetoCanadaasacrewmanonasmall steeragevessel. ItisnotknownjustwhenhearrivedinCanada,butitisbelieveditwasinsometimein1902asthisisthe immigrationdategivenforhimonthe1906census. Healsoshowsup,age35,onthe1911censusatStrassburg,near Regina,Sask. ArchienevermarriedandlittleisknownabouthisearlyyearsinCanadaotherthanheeventuallysettledin Storthoaks,Saskatchewan.
