salesandmarketingpositionsbeforeretiringin1988asaMarketingTrainingOfficer. In1985,hewaspresidentoftheemployee'sQuarterCenturyClub
intheclub's50thyear. Inhisyoungerdaysheserved4yearsintheCanadianMilitia(SignalCorps)attainingtherankofsergeant. Hewasalsoa
memberoftheMasonicOrderwherehebecameaMasterMason. UntilmovingtoBrampton,JimwasavolunteerforseveralyearsintheIntensiveCare
UnitoftheQueenswayGeneralHospitalnearhishomeinEtobicoke. InBrampton,hedidvolunteerworkforPeelHospiceforawhileandlater
completeda3-yeartermontheBoardofDirectorsfortheCondobuildingwherehepresentlyresides. Heenjoyshiscomputerandemailcontactsashe
searchesthe'net'whileworkingonhisfamilygenealogyresearchprojects.
AshealthproblemsbegantodevelopforbothJimandhiswifeIsabell,homemaintenancebecameincreasinglydifficult. Thelogicalalternativewasthe
salein1995,ofthelong-timehomeinEtobicokeandthenamovetoaCondominiumapartmentinBramptontobeneartheirthreemarrieddaughters.
Unfortunately,Isabelldiedfromtheeffectsofpancreaticandbreastcancerjustafewshortmonthsaftertheymovedin. In1996hemetFlorence,a
widow,whowasalsoaresidentinthebuilding. Theyweremarried23August1997,bya"J.P."FrankRussell,inaprivateceremonyheldintheparty
roomofthebuildinginthepresenceofallmembersofbothfamilies,includingtheircombined11grandchildren.

knitting--askillshelearnedfromhermother. Sheturnedoutaprodigiousamountofknittedbabywearandotheritemsforallherchildrenaswellas
giftsforothers. Priortobecomingafull-timehomemaker,shewasemployedasalegalsecretary. IsabellbecameandremainedaGirlGuideLeader
untilafterheryoungestdaughterhadstartedinGuiding. Todayshewouldbepleasedtolearnthatallhergranddaughtershavealsobeenactiveinthe
Girl-Guidemovement. Isabelllovedtoplaycardsandboardgameswithherdaughtersandgrandchildrenanddidsowithanenjoymentandintensity
levelthatwashardtobelieve. (PossiblyonemajorcharacterflawwasthatshefounditextremelydifficulttopassaBingoParlour). Developinghealth
problemsforcedthesaleofthelong-timehomeinEtobicokeandamovetoacondominiumapartmentinBramptoninMayof1995. Shedidn'thavelong
toenjoyit,asjustafewmonthslaterinDecember,IsabelldiedintheCreditValleyHospital,Mississauga,Ontario,afteralengthy3-yearbattlewith
pancreaticandbreastcancer.
BURIAL: CremationtookplaceatMeadowvaleCrematorium,Mississauga,Ontario,15Dec1995. AMemorialServicewasheldinBrampton,Ontario,
18Dec1995andhercremationasheswerelaterscatteredatthefamilycottageatMillerLake,Ontario,duringashortfamilyserviceheldthefollowing
spring.

iscurrentlyemployedinaclericalfunctionwithOntarioPowerGenerating,(oneofthesuccessorcompaniesoftheformer
OntarioHydro.) Barbalsohasatalentforcakedecoratingandusuallyfindsherselfcalledupontoprovideoneofher
'specials'wheneverthefamilyholdsabirthdayoranniversarygathering.

Russellwasunfortunatelybornmentallyhandicappedandalsosufferedfromepilepticseizures. Hisconditionworsenedto
thepointthatitbecamenecessaryforhimtohaveround-the-clockcareinaChildren'sHospitalinOrillia. Justafterhis7th
birthday,hediedinhospitalwhenhefailedtorecoverfromaseizure.
However,partofRussellliveson. Itwasarrangedtohavehiscorneastransplanted. Wesubsequentlylearnedthatone
corneawenttoablindtypist,(wholaterwroteusaletter),andtheotherwenttoacarpenterwhohadlosthissightinan
industrialaccident.

intervened.Later,whenherowndaughterswereofanagetojoin,shewentbackasaleaderforseveralyears. Judy
workedasasecretaryintheformerResearchDivisionofOntarioHydroformanyyears,whichwaswhereshemether
futurehusbandJohn. Sheretiredtobecomeafulltimehomemaker,butnowthatherchildrenareolder,sheisbackinthe
workforceasaSchoolSecretaryforthePeelBoardofEducationinBramptonwherethefamilycurrentlyresides. Judy
andfamilyhavealsotakenonthechoreoffosteringdogsforthe"SeeingEye"programandatthiswriting(2007)arenow
workingwiththeir9thdog. (Whilenotalloftheirdogshave'graduated',ithasbeengratifyingforthemtoseesome
successfulplacements).

Thelastofourchildren,Arlenewasbornwithan'RHnegativebloodfactor'which,atthattimerequiredanimmediate
bloodtransfusioneventhoughshewasonlyafewhoursold. Asherfather,Ihadthetraumaticexperienceoftransferring
herinamobileincubator,(inmyowncaraccompaniedbyanurse),fromtheQueenswayGeneralhospitalinEtobicoke
whereshewasborn,toToronto'sSickChildren'sHospitalwherethebloodtransfusionwasperformed.
Asateenager,Arleneachievedthe"CanadaCord",(thenthehighestawardattainableintheGirlGuideMovement). She
madethe"Dean'sList"andgraduatedwithHonoursfromRyersonUniversityinTorontowithaBachelorofBusiness
ManagementDegree. Arleneenjoyssingingandherchoiractivitiesandatthiswritingisthelongestservingmemberof
herchurchchoir. Shehasbeencalleduponasasoloistatweddings(includingthoseofbothhersisters.) Arleneandher
futurehusbandGrahamfirstmetintheirteenageyears,whenaspartoftheirrespectiveGuideandScouttroops,they
bothhappenedtobeworkingonthesamerenovationprojectatadistrictsummercamp. Itturnedouttheywereboth
assignedtopaintthesamewashroom--andit'sbeentrueloveeversince! (It'salsointerestingtonotethatGrahamnow
doesallthepainting). ArleneiscurrentlyaContractadministratorinOntarioPowerGeneration-Nuclear,oneofthe
successorcompaniesoftheformerOntarioHydro.

Heisfoundonthe1901censusat"LittleCamoquhill"withhisparentsand6sistersiblingsthenstillathome. (Histhreeolderbrothershadalreadyleft).
MyfatherfirstcametoCanadaabout1905andaftertworeturntripstoScotland,heimmigratedtostayin1909andtraveledaroundtheprairiesdoing
farmwork. Heispickeduponthe1911censusonafarmnearRegina. Itisbelievedthatitwasaroundthistimewhenhefirstmetmymother. Shehad
beenvisitinghersisterClaraandherhusbandBobFogalontheirfarmnearLaflechewhendadcamecallinglookingforwork. It'snotknownhowlong
hestayed,butobviouslyhekeptintouchwithmymother. ItisknowntheymetagainintheMontrealareawhereMomworkedforawhilebeforedad
wentwestagain. EventuallytheywoundupinToronto,marriedandsettledtostay.Dadoncetoldmeabouthisexperiencesononeofhistripshome.
Aftersayinghellotohismother,hewenttothebarnwherehisfatherwasharnessingahorse. Whenhecalledoutagreeting,thestrangevoicestartled
thehorsethatthenkickedoutandbrokehisfather'sleg. Dad'shomecomingwasthenextendeduntilhisfathercouldmanageonhisown.
OncesettledinToronto,heworkedfirstasateamsterforHendriecartage,thenthefreightagentforCNRailways. Althoughtheuseoftruckswas
increasing,horseswerestillamajorformoftransportbeforeWWII. TheTorontoharbourwouldoftenfreezehardinthewinterandDadsometimesdrove
ateamandsleighwithsuppliesacrosstheicetotheTorontoIslandswhereasizablenumberofpeoplethenlivedyear-round. Welivedinacompany
flatat#5PeterStreetnextdoortohisworklocation,onthenorth-eastcornerofPeterandFrontstreetsacrossfromwheretheRogersSky-Domeis
today. Aspartofhisrentalarrangementforthecompanyflat,Dadwasrequiredtohelpfeedandwaterthehorsesonweekends. However,afterawork
relatedinjuryin1936,(hisfirstbrokenleg),hewasletgo. (Thesewerethe"depression"pre-waryearsandtherewerenounionsinthosedaystoprotect
theworkers'interests).
Dadlaterbecameashipper-receiverforatruckingcompanyspecializinginmovingmachineryandotherheavyequipment. Itwashardphysicalwork
andonceagain,employmentinjuriestooktheirtoll. Hesufferedseveralseriousaccidentsincludinghavingbothlegsbroken,oneforthesecondtime.
Theseinjurieslaterdevelopedintoseverearthritisleavinghimvirtuallyimmobileinhislateryears. Hisfirstlegoperationhadbeen"botched"andlater
requiredanotheroperationthatinturn,lefthimwithapermanentlimp. TheEmploymentCompensationBoardawardedhimagenerous(?)"Life-time"
pensionof$5.00amonth. Buthewasatougholdbirdandwhenhelivedlongerthantheyexpected,theBoard"signedhimoff"withalumpsum
paymentof$250.00onhis75thbirthday. Hehadtaughthimselftoplaythe"squeezebox",asmallaccordionhehadbroughtwithhimfromScotland. It
wascertainlyalife-timeofenjoymentforhimoverthemilesandyears. Asthefabricdriedoutandtheseamssplit,hepatcheditwithtapetokeepit
goingmuchtothedelightofhisgranddaughterBarbarawhoalwayspressuredhimtoplayitforher.
Oneeveninginhissleep,helapsedintoacomafromwhichheneverregainedconsciousness. Movedtoahospital,hediedtherepeacefullyabouta
weeklater. HeisburiedwithhiswifeinMountPleasantCemetery,Section54,Grave#1988.

fatherinTorontowheretheysettledandlivedtherestoftheirdays. Sometimeaftermyfather'sdeath,mymotherdevelopedseverearthritisinbothher
handstotheextentthattheybecamevirtuallyuseless. Shebecameunabletocareforherselfandwasadmittedtoanursinghome. Whilethere,she
slippedandfellbreakingherhip. Sheneverfullyrecoveredfromthissetbackanddiedsoonafterwardsinthenursinghome. Sheisburiedwithher
husbandinMountPleasantCemetery,Toronto,Section54,Grave#1988.

finallycaughtuptohim. InthelastfewyearsofhislifehedevelopedsevereEmphysema,whichalmostcompletelydisabledhim. Thisprogressedtothe
pointthathewashospitalizedintheOakville-Trafalgarhospitalwherehediedin1967justoneyeartothedayafterthedeathofhiswife. Heisburied

certainly,thestigmaofhisillegitimacyaffectedhimallhislife. EvenhisheadstoneinthecemeteryinMagnolia,Alberta,
simplyrecordshisbirthas1876andhisdeathas1953. ItisnowknownhisparentsweremarriedonDecember11,1876
inAlloa,Clackmannanshire,andnotintheDenny/BalfronareaofStirlingshirewherebothfamiliesthenfarmedand
resided. Withthepassingoftimeandthepeopleinvolved,thedetailsofhisbirtharenolongerimportantexceptforthis
record. However,forthetimesitlikelydistressedboththeWaddellandEadiefamilies. Incorrectinformationabouthis
ageevenappearedonthe1881Britishcensus,andwhetherornotthiswasunintendedoranattempttohidehisbirth
detailsisnotnowknown. Certainly,the1881censuslistsArchieasborninBothkennar,whilehisbirthextract,reference
"Birth145.jpg",registershiminBannockburn. Hewasalsoshownasayoungerthird-bornchild,insteadofbeingthefirst-
borninthefamilyashewasknowntobe. (IclearlyrecallmyfatherreferringtoArchieashisoldestbrother). Thelater
1891censustakenat"NorthFieldFarm",Dunipace,Stirlingcorrectsthisandgiveshisageas"15"which,equateswith
hisknownbirthyearof1876. ThiscensuslistsArchibald(andhisyoungerbrotherJohn),asthenlivingwithhis
GrandmotherMargaretEadie'sfamily. Hewasnotfoundonthe1901Scottishcensusandmayhavebeenonhiswayto
Canadaatthattime.
Whetherornotitwasbecauseofhisbirthsituation,orsomethingelsewillneverbeknown,butalife-longanimosity
reportedlydevelopedbetweenArchieandhisfather. Archieisknowntohaveexpressedthesentimentthat"hedidn't
reallyfeelhewasamemberofthefamily." Perhapsbecauseofthis,hewasalsothefirstoffourbrothersinthefamilyto
immigratetoCanada. HestruckoutonhisownatanearlyagebytakingpassagetoCanadaasacrewmanonasmall
steeragevessel. ItisnotknownjustwhenhearrivedinCanada,butitisbelieveditwasinsometimein1902asthisisthe
immigrationdategivenforhimonthe1906census. Healsoshowsup,age35,onthe1911censusatStrassburg,near

beenonafarm,sotheruralprairielifestyleinthe1930'swasquiteanexperienceforme. (Noflushtoiletsorelectricity,
andtheheat,dustandgrasshopperswereoppressive). Their3youngestboysandIwereallaboutthesameageand
theyweresoonshowingthiscitykidhowtosettrapsforgophers--(althoughIdon'trecallthatwecaughtany). WhatIdo
recall,isthatIthoughtitwasgreatfuntosneakawaybehindthebarnandchasethehenstogetthemflyingeverywhich
way. Theyhadayoungpupthatsoonjoinedinwithme. Thatwasfine,untilonetimehecaught,killedandstartedtoeat
ahen. Iwentbacktothehouseandtoldonhim. Oneoftheolderbrothersthensaid, "Well,wecan'thaveadogona
farmthatkillsandeatschickens"andwiththat,hetookthedogoutbehindthebarn--andkilledhim. Thatcertainlylefta

inatornadothathitonenightwhilewewereatClara's. Weallhuddledinthecellar. (IwascarriedtothecellarasIwas
asleepwhenthestormhitanddidn'tknowaboutittillmorning). Fortunately,therewasnorealdamagetothehouseor
barnasIrecall,andthehorseswereOK. Buttheouthousewascarriedawayandneverfound--leavingmewondering
justwhereitwentandifsomeonehadreceivedanunexpected'surprise'. Ialsorememberthatawagonmyunclewas
workingon,waspickedupanddroppedbasicallyundamagedinthenextfield. Thestormcutaverynarrowswath,as
