It includes journal articles, monographs, theses and disserta- tions,conferencepapers,andsomeunpublishedmanuscripts. Arrangement of Entries and Aids to Retrieval The entries in this bibliography are arranged alphabetically by broad themes,thenbyauthorandtitleundereachtopic.Itisobviousthatsome entriescouldhavebeenplacedundermorethanonetopicheading,butin theinterestofspaceonlyoneentrywasmadeforeachrecord,underwhat was determined to be the most appropriate heading. The Areas of ResearchlistedintheContentsaretheprimarytoolforretrievingentries. TheSupplementarySubjectIndexliststopicsofinterestotherthanthose mentionedundertheAreasofResearch. Eachentryhasauniqueitemnumbertoaidretrievalthroughthethree indexes provided—a Personal Name Index, an Index of Corporate Names/Sponsors, and a Supplementary Subject Index. It should be noted that the Personal Name Index and the Index of Corporate Names/Sponsorsincludenamesofpersons/organizationswhich,though not mentioned on the title page, have made a significant contribution to the work. Numbers under each entry in the indexes refer to the unique itemnumberassignedinthemaintext.Locationinformationisprovided for many of the items, indicating holding institutions and location sym- bols.However,thisdoesnotmeanthatthesearetheonlyinstitutionsthat havecopiesoftheitems.Usersofthebibliographyareadvisedtoconsult theirlocallibrariesaswellasotherrelevantinstitutionsforcopiesoflisted items. vii viii / Introduction Abstracting The items for which abstracts have not been supplied represent items thatthecompilerwasnotabletoconsult,eithertoverifytheentriesorto prepare an abstract, or for which abstracts could not be located in data- bases. There are 48 such records in the bibliography, representing approximately 12 percent of the entries.
