Thy splendor never falls, Truth dwells within thy walls. Thy beauty still enthralls DearTrafalgar. Through thee we honour Truth, virtue, loveliness. Thy friendships e'er possess Our constancy. Tliy spirit fills us through. So we'll be ever true To our dear blue and blue OfTrafalgar. O! Alma Mater: How can we from thee part? Thou only hast our heart, Dearest of schools. Thy glory we shall see Wherever we may be. Still love ofTrafalgar. Our future rules. Built in 1859 by the flamboyant Sheriff of Ontario County Nelson Gilbert"Iron"Reynolds.TrafalgarCastle remains a unique Canadian treasure. Designed by the Toronto architect Joseph Sheard, the castle was built of limestone and stone in the Elizabethan style. It boasts 15 towers, secret passageways,a tunnel to Lake Ontario, and was reputed to have cost an astounding $70,000. Guarded by the stone Trafalgar Lions, the main entrance doors of soHd oak lead into a wide hallway some 105 feet long. This centralhall facesamassive carved oak staircasedominated by four magnificent stained glass windows incorporating the Arms of England, Scotland, Canada and the Reynolds families. There were 73 separate apartments and many ofthe materials and furnishings were imported from Europe. The Castle was lit by gaslight manu- factured in its own gashouse on the extensive grounds. Some ofthe fine marble fireplaces were carved by Jonathon Wolfenden of Whitby. Nelson Reynolds fathered 24 children with two wives. An officerin the 11th Lancers ofEngland,Nelson Reynolds was elect- ed to the Legislative Assembly ofUpperCanada. He prospered as the President of the Marmora Foundry, and was involved in bank- ing, mercantile business, railroads and shipping.During theiryears in residence, the Reynolds lived and entertained lavishly. The glit- tering receptions and balls made Trafalgar Castle the centre of society and numbered among its guests.Prince Arthur, third son of Queen Victoria, and later, the Duke of Connaught who became Governor General of Canada. Beset with financial difficulties, Reynolds was forced to sell his dream home to the Methodist Church. In 1874 Trafalgar Castle became the Ontario Ladies' College, a residential school for young ladies. Nelson Reynolds served on the Board ofdirectors until his death in 1881.More than 100 years later, O.L.C. was renamed Trafalgar Castle and remains to this day a school for young women. 3 TABLE OF CONTENTS Title Page 1 School Song 2 School History 3 Table of Contents 4 Principal's Message 5 Vice-Principal, Head Girl Messages 6 Director of Residence and Gap Student 7 Editorial and Staff 8 Family 9 Faculty 10-11 Staff 12-13 Grads 14-19 Seniors 20-21 Grade Eleven 22 GradeTen 23 Grade Nine 24 Grades Eight and Seven 25 Day Girls 26 Boarders 27 Organizations 28 Prefects 29 Athletic Association, Student Council 30 Social Committee, Castle Signatures 31 Student Council, Grad Committee 32 Spirit 33 Carter House 34 Farewell House 35 Hare House 36 Maxwell House 37 Christmas Choir, Celebration Singers 38 Tour Choir 39 Piano and Voice Students 40 Debating Society and Environmental Club 41 Athletics 42 SoccerTeam 43 Cross Country andTrack Teams 44 Junior and SeniorVolleyball 45 Junior and Senior Basketball 46 Gymnastics and Golf 47 Junior and SeniorTennis 48 Softball Team 49 Activities 50 Pumpkin Pursuit 51 CampingWeekend 52-53 Chemistry Week 54 Stratford and Sunset Boulevard 55 Bazaar 56-57 House Plays 58-59 Festival of Carols 60 Formal 61 Christmas Dinner 62-63 Ski Day 64-65 Experience Week 66-67 Take Out Daughters to Work 68 Thirty Hour Famine 69 Spirit Week 70-71 School Play - Snoopy 72-73 Senior Dinner 74-75 May Day 76-77 House Swim Meet 78 Track and Field Day 79 GradTea 80 Awards Day 81 Honour Society 82 Valedictory Address 83 Trafalgar Day 84-85 Grad Dance 86 Mr. Kamcke's Retirement Dinner 87 We're Back on Track! For the past seventeen years I have had the opportunity and the honour ofwriting a short message in this fine pubHcation.I have also enjoyed reading the finished prod- uct each year and have carefully preserved all past issues to take with me when I leave. I understand that the theme for the yearbook this year is "windows".When I was offered the chance to come here seventeen years ago, a window of opportunity opened up for me. I had long dreamed of leading a school Uke ours and I eagerly passed through that window to a new phase of my career and life. I have never for a moment regretted passing through that window, although the challenges of my new life amongst girls after so many years with boys put me to the test. When I, along with this year's grads, have left the school, it will be harder for us to retain the many joys of life that Trafalgar Castle has to offer. In the years ahead we will turn to this yearbook as a window into the past. By passing through that window we will, through memory, enjoy again the friendships and accomplishments of our times in this wonderful place. In closing I would like to congratulate the editors.Julienne Hsu and PeggyYu. and their staff for their work and dedication in once again producing this book. I know it will provide an accurate record ofthe past year and open up a window for wonderful memories in the future. I would also hke to,on behalfofthe whole school, thank Mrs. Janet Pollitt who works tirelessly to ensure that each yearthe yearbook is ofthe high- est quality. MESSAGE VICE-PRINCIPAL'S Once again, I have been asked to put pen to paper and write a message for the yearbook. This year the theme for our yearbook is "windows". How appropriate! Many ofyou will have noted that this year my office underwent some remodeling and new windows were part of its transforma- tion. A window of opportunity is a finite period of time where one has a unique chance to perform a task or accomphsh a task. We are presented with these windows of opportunity each day. Opportunities to make a difference in the world or in the future of those around us.All too often we miss these Mr.J.B.McClure windows of opportunity or let them slip by. Vice-Principal/DirectorofStudies I want to encourage you to look for windows ofopportu- nity where you can make a difference by helping others,giv- ing a word of encouragement, befriending the lonely, giving from yourplenty to those less fortunate ormaking the world a better place in which to live. We all need to seize these opportunities when they present themselves, for if we hesi- tate they will be gone. I want to wish the graduates success in your future endeavours. We are proud of you as you leave us. You are the best we have to offer. Come back and let us know of your accomplishments. Mr.and Mrs.McClure at the GradDance. HEAD MESSAGE GIRL'S It seems like yesterday that I was moving into my new room and helping others to move in also. But when I saw all the empty rooms on the last day ofschool,I realized that my one year of boarding has vanished, leaving me with memo- ries ofgood friends and good times. I knowthat I'll neverget another opportunity to come as close to friends again, so I will cherish the memories. I can't thank enough the staff and faculty who made it possible for me to make it through my last year, from extra help and motivation tojust caring and making me feel com- fortable. I would also Uke to thank the prefects, who were a great group to work with and who knew and showed the true meaning of co-operation. To the students: don't take for granted the opportunities given at Trafalgar. The education, leadership and life skills they provide, can only benefit you. To the grads: good luck in your future endeavours and if you believe, you can achieve. Finally toTrafalgar: thank you for giving me the opportu- nity to learn and to practise leadership. It has allowed me to grow into a better person. As I take these life skills and use them in my future, I will always be grateful toTrafalgar. "Here lies my past. Good-bye, I have embraced it.Thank you everyone. I wouldn't have missed it". Abigail Pearson, head girl Abi at the Grad Dance. at Senior Dinner.
