FOREWORD
It is with great pleasure that we are bringing" out Sri
Vishnu-Sahasranama-Bhashya of Parasara Bhattar together
'with English Translation. In 1967 the introductory portion
Only of Bhatta-BhaShya was. published by our Sabha With'
English Translation by Late Sr'i K, Bhashyam, (Advocate and
Minister, Madras State) under the guidance of Sri U. Ve
UttamoorViraraghavacharya Svami and with 'the help of 'Sri
V.S. SeshadriACharya. Eversince that time there has been a
great demand for the entire Bhashya with Translation. We
entrusred the work to Sri A. Srinivasa Flaghavanof Pudukkottai
who gladly did the full Translation of the Bhashya in English
and also edited it. We express our grateful thanksto him for
the same. ' '

Sri Vlshnu-sahasrahama'Is oneof the most popular and
_wellknown stotras and there are nearly forty commentarieson
It. _Thatof Sri SankaracharyaIs the earliest of them. Parasara
Bhattar, who was a junior- contemporary and direct disciple
of ' Sri Hamanuja, has written a detailed commentary on It,
‘which goes by the name of 'Bhagavad-guna-darpana', whlch
is being published now with 3 Translationin English.
Parasarthattar beginshis commentary with an illumi-
nating and interesting Introductionin which he first describes
the greatness of Vedavyasa as a highly respected and reputed
sagefof deep knowledge. Mahabharata,which is often refer-
red to as the fifth Veda, is the workof Vedavyasa and Bhattar
'quotes several slokas from different Puranas to prove its
validity and high place in the religious literature. Next
Bhattartakes up Srl Vishnu-Sahasranamawhich'Is the subject
matterofchapter 149 of the Aanusaasanika parva (Parva 13)
ofMahabharara Then he enumerates six reasons to prove
the‘ greatness, universal popularity and authoritativeness of
Vishnu The reasonsare;

It is the consideredopinion of Bhishme that it is the
best and the easiest of all dharmes.
It is accepted by all that It is the easiest and moat
successful meansfor the attainmentof all fruits.
it is in conformity with the teachings of Bhagavad
Gita and other religious texts.
Then Bhattar passes on to comment on the thirteen
introductory slokas in the Chapter on Sehasranama, where alx
questions are put by Yudhistira to Bhishma and convincing
answers are given by the latter. Here are the questionsand
their answers:
1. Which is the SupremeDeity?
2 Which is the highest goal?
3. Which is the deity that is to be worshipped?
4 -Which again is the deity whose names are to be

chanted?
9' Which is the greatest Dha'rme in youropinion?
Which is the means that will bring about release from
bondage? '
Bhishme answers these questions. almost in a reverse
order, since there is some propriety in doing so as the
knowledgeof the one leads to thatof another. Bhishme says a
