It arose froma convergenceofseveralhot topics: 1. visualization of built environments for engineering, historical and other purposes, 2. virtual reconstruction ofarchitecture from visual data ofexisting struc tures, whether via photogrammetric or range sensingtechniques, and 3. augmentation ofvideodataofarchitecture with usefulinformation. The focushereisonarchitectureand howto present it,enhanceit's abilities, make it easierto understand and makeit accessibleto a larger public. Collectiveinterest in this topic led to the International Symposium on Virtual and Augmented Architecture, whose papers are contained in this book. As editors, wewerevery pleased about howwellthe different papers chosengavea nicefocusto the topicand conference.Itisclearthat there are many differentresearch approaches still active inthis area - this makesit an exciting time. Wehope that this bookcapturesthatexcitement and succeeds in bringing it to you. Wewouldliketo thank the ED CAMERA network (ERB FMRX-CT97 0127)and the MarieCurieFellowshipprogramme (HPMF-CT-1999-0070)for support, andespeciallythe Computer ScienceDepartmentat Trinity College Dublin for hosting the conference. Support for the conference also comes from UniversityofEdinburgh and the Eurographics Association. The editors appreciate the efforts of the programme committee in getting the reviews done in a short time. Mairin Murray deservesthanks forall ofthe help with the organization ofthe conference. And many thanks to Rebecca Mowat at Springer-VerlagUKfor all the help with these proceedings!
