OBITUARY 97 2 OUR SMILING DEAN In 2012 when the first MBBS cohort entered the third year, we operated 5 concurrent postings so that the number of students for each posting will remain small and students will receive close attention by their teachers. In 2013, when these students entered the fourth year, the complexity of operation increased as there are now many specialty postings that they have to rotate through, such as Forensic Medicine, Dermatology, Radiology, Otolaryngology, Ophthalmology, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Psychiatry, and various aspects of Community Medicine. As not all these disciplines are available at Hospital Ampang, we have to arrange their postings in Hospital Kuala Lumpur and Hospital Rehabilitasi Cheras. The logistic problems were immense and often unpredictable. Thank to our resourceful and hardworking staff, we managed to get the postings organised. Credit must also be given to our students, as many a time our undaunted would brave the erratic city centre traffic to attend the teaching-learning activities in these locations. These problems were also faced by students in the other three courses: Chinese Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nursing. Transport woes reign number one in the feedbacks given by our students. We hope these could be lessened when the three UTAR campuses in the Klang Valley come together in Sungai Long by 2015 and more buses would then be available to ply the routes and facilitate the students to travel to the sites of teaching- learning. Naturally, the ideal solution is to have our own teaching hospital where the teaching-learning activities can be conducted under one roof. The postgraduate programmes (MSc and PhD by research) are in full swing in 2013. By the end of the year, 14 students were registered, while another 16 are waiting in the pipeline as they make initial exploration under the 3 guidance of their supervisors. Under FMHS, four research centres had been established: Centre for Stem Cell Research, Centre for Cancer Research, Centre for Research in Chinese Medicine, and Centre for Research in Non-Communicable Diseases. The last was established in 2013 in line with the thrust of research in this area endorsed by both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. The Centre for Stem Cell Research brought in the largest amount of funding among all. Among the many research projects undertaken by our staff, one group collaborating with University Malaya Medical Centre reported the first successful production of sustainable Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell lines (IPSC) from osteosarcoma cells, a form of bone cancer. UTAR researchers are now the first in Malaysia to produce a sustainable IPSC line, not just from one source of steosarcoma, but from four sources of osteosarcoma cells. It is meaningful to all of us because it is not an easy task to establish such a cell line and only recently in December 2012, the discoverer of this technology was awarded the Nobel Prize, indicating the immense potential of such cell lines in the practice of personalised medicine. The staff in the FMHS are also active in community activities during their spare time. Some of these activities were carried out with the participation of our students. It is never too early to inculcate such readiness and desire to help, and the spirit of volunteerism among the novices. Joint professional and community activities continued to be organised together with Hospital Sungai Long, our immediate neighbour, and also other non- government organisations. We look forward to more collaboration for community activities in the future. In a recent keynote address by our Direct-General of Health, Ministry of Health of Malaysia, he expressed concerns that workers in his Ministry tend to have a silo mentality. He encourages his staff to come out of their comfort zones and work with others within the Ministry and outside, to be as inclusive as possible. I totally agree with him. Whether in education, research or service, we should work with others, not just within Malaysia, but also globally. I do urge our academic staff to make the lead in research collaboration with our counterparts in other parts of the World. Let us not be diffident about our present status being a budding medical institution; let us be brave to build new relationships and explore new ventures! In 2013, we lost a great teacher, Associate Professor Dr Teo Wee Sin, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, who came to help us to start the Clinical Phase. His contribution to the UTAR medical course will forever be fondly remembered and deeply appreciated. Last, but not the least, we look forward to greater achievements and innovative endeavours by all the staff in the FMHS in the coming year!
