Register of the College, University and Academy School Bulletin Collection Heritage Microfilm 46 Adventist Heritage Center James White Library Andrews University Berrien Springs, MI 49104-1400 1986 College and Academy School Bulletins Heritage Microfilm 46 Scope and Content This collection of microfilmed documents constitutes the General Conference Department of Education’s collection of bulletins or announcements of colleges and academies. In many cases it includes the first bulletins issued by the schools. The collection is principally of North American schools, though some overseas schools are included. A typical school bulletin includes a history, a description, and philosophy of the school, financial information, a description of the curriculum, a roster of the faculty, and in some cases a listing of former students. The collection includes some informational booklets as well as student handbooks, promotional material, a few pictorial annuals, and other similar publications. For each school, a copy of the article pertaining to the school from the Seventh- day Adventist Encyclopedia (1976 edition), if any, was filmed before the first bulletin. Arrangement This microfilm collection begins with the bulletin of the earliest available year for each institution and concludes generally with the 1984/1985 school year, or the last year of operation for the institution if it is defunct. While this collection is quite complete, gaps do occur. No effort was made to fill these gaps because of time and cost considerations. A complete set of bulletins for each school should be available at the institution. The North American Division college and university bulletins appear first on the microfilm followed by the North American Division academy bulletins, and finally by the overseas school bulletins. The colleges and academies in the overseas section were filmed together due to the limited number of these bulletins in the collection. If the overseas school’s name is in a language other than English, it was filmed in alphabetical order under the English translation/transliteration of its name. In many cases for the overseas schools, there may not be a bulletin in the collection for the school under its 1986 or last name. On the inventory the schools are arranged by their 1986 or last name, and all name changes are shown at that location. Each school was filmed in its entirety from the earliest bulletin to the latest. If a school experienced any change of name, all of the bulletins issued by the institution, no matter what the name, will be together, on the microfilm, arranged according to the schools name in the 1986 SDA Yearbook, or it name at closing if the school is defunct. For example, Andrews University began as Battle Creek College and later was known as Emmanuel Missionary College. The bulletins issued under these first two names were filmed in chronological order along with the bulletins for Andrews University, and are found on the microfilm under Andrews University. If a college began as an academy and later became a junior college or a college, the bulletins for the period of time it was an academy will be found in the academy School Bulletin Collection–page 3 section of the microfilm. The inventory will aid the researcher in understanding the arrangement. The following is a sample inventory entry: Emmanuel Missionary College 1906-07 to 1910-11 1911 Summer School Andrews University 1960-61 The inventory entry above shows the institution (EMC and AU), with Emmanuel Missionary College followed by Andrews University. The dates indicate the years for which bulletins are available. The span indicates that bulletins for all the academic years within the span (1906-07, 1907-08, 1908-09, 1909-10, and 1910-11) are available. [The above information from the Register prepared by the Office of Archives and Statistics, General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.
