June 8, 2014 A LOUD, RUSHING WIND Things couldn’t have been worse. Even though Jesus had risen from the dead and appeared to his apostles, even though Thomas had seen his wounds and placed his hand in the side of Christ, even though the apostles had seen Christ ascend back to heaven—it just wasn’t enough. The small band of Christ’s followers was paralyzed by fear—they couldn’t preach, they could- n’t teach. As a matter of fact, the one right thing they were doing was pray- ing. Huddled in a room in Jerusalem they waited and prayed with a great intensity—they were waiting for the Promised Spirit. They had recalled the words of Christ: “No, I will not abandon you as orphans--I will come to you...”. (John 14:18 ) And then there was the absolute explosion of Divine Power. The Acts of the Apostles describes it this way: “And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as they gave them utter- ance.” (Acts 2: 2-4) That very day—right away—the apostles went out and made 3,000 new Catholics and the Church was born. The timid and cowardly had become brave and felt the presence of the Holy Spirit in their hearts. They were no longer tentative; they did not hesitate. The prospect of persecution, being thrown in jail and innumerable inconveniences and difficulties did not prevent them from preaching the Gospel. They did not care who stood in their way. They fervently believed that Christ was with them and that they possessed the Holy Spirit. Nothing could stop them. As a matter of fact, the more the Church was persecuted, the more the Church grew and the number of converts increased. For 2000 years there have been all sorts of people who thought that they had dealt a death blow to the Catholic Church. Lenin, Stalin and a multi- tude of others thought that they would break the Church. Communists, athe- ists, Roman Emperors, various dictators in all sorts of places and circum- stances thought that they could end the Catholic Church. The mistake they made was that they thought the Church was merely a human institution. They forgot that the Church had a divine founder, Our Lord Jesus Christ, and that the Church is continuously animated by the Holy Spirit. They forgot the promise of Jesus: “Behold I am with you all days, even to the end of the world.” (Matt 28: 20) Today is the Birthday of the Catholic Church. Happy Birthday to all of us! THE FOLLOWING GIRLS WILL BE GRADUATING AND RECEIVING AWARDS AT THE CONCERT Bell Trophy Natalie Abrusci Elizabeth D' Angelo Caitlin Egan Maggie Dailey Brianna Hefele Vanessa Martins Mickayla Mc Donough Kathryn Philbin Andrea Ryan Mary Tice Catholics for Freedom of Religion Educating and Advocating for Freedom of Religion for All June 8, 2014 A America’s First Freedom: Religious Liberty On Tuesday, March 25th, the Supreme Court heard arguments regarding whether or not for-profit companies Hobby Lobby and Conestoga Woods have the right to run their businesses according to the religious convictions of their owners who object to providing products and services required by the Health and Human Services mandate. This is a critical Religious Freedom issue. The ruling from the Supreme Court is expected at any time now. Please ask God to move upon the hearts and minds of the justices, in the midst of their decision making, to preserve the First Amendment rights guar- anteed to us, including Americans who own a business and run it in keeping with their religious beliefs. Following is a sug- gested prayer for a decision that preserves religious liberty. Lord God, Our Father, you are the Righteous Judge over all the earth. We pray that you will have mercy on the United States as the Supreme Court decides a case that will shape the balance between government power and freedom of religion. Thank you for the powerful words of the attorneys for Hobby Lobby as they argued that our free exercise of religion includes how Christians live and work, not just what we do when we gather for worship, so that whatever we do in word or deed, we may do it in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Enlighten the Justices of the Supreme Court to acknowledge that you alone are Lord of our consciences. Give the Court humility to recognize that you are the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and that you have instituted human government so that your people may serve the Lord without fear, in holiness and righteousness before you, all the days of our life. And Lord, give us grace and boldness to use the religious liberty that we still have to make your truth and mercy known. Amen. During this Fortnight For Freedom look into your heart and decide what you can do to preserve religious freedom. The only mistake you could make is to think you can do nothing. Pray for our country’s leaders that they may be moved to protect our first freedom. Pray for our clergy that they may teach and inform us of the attacks on our liberty. Attend Fortnight events and support your fellow Catholics working through Catholics for Freedom of Religion in the cause of reli- gious liberty. “Today we are the witnesses. We will pray and we will speak. We will act together and invite others to join us. Our cause is a cause that is great and a truth that cannot be vanquished.” Bishop William Murphy Fortnight events in the Diocese of Rockville Centre include: Bishop Murphy will celebrate the opening Mass, which marks the beginning of the Fortnight, on June 21st at 5:00 PM at St. Agnes Cathedral, 29 Quealy Pl, Rockville Centre, NY 11570. SUGGESTIONS FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE During this month let us renew our devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, incor- porating prayers which will unite us fully to the Heart of Christ. Prayers that will express our gratitude for His Mercy and Love, especially for His Presence in the Eucharist. Since this devotion is about Christ’s love for us let us put our trust in that love and find among our family members, friends, neighbors, and in our work place all those most in need of love and compassion, extending Jesus’ love and mercy to all, and our own love for them. Share your reactions and feedback by calling (516) 746-6585 x9592. St. Aidan’s Pastoral Coun- cil tries to be responsive to the needs of our parish. INISFADA - ITS BIRTH TO ITS DEMISE Thursday, June 12, 2014 at 7:30 PM Manhasset Public Library Presented by Father Damian Halligan, SJ Inisfada means “Long Island” in Gaelic. Formerly the summer home to Nicholas Brady, a Manhattan business man, and his wife, Genevieve. This eighty-five room mansion in Manhasset, Long Island sat on thirty acres of rolling lawns, beautiful formal gardens, and stone statues. Tudor Elizabethan in style, it was adorned with gargoyles, angels and small animals from its eaves and corners, and included a great hall, solarium, billard room, master suites, kitchen suites, a private chapel, secondary and tertiary staircases...everything that a Gold Coast mansion would have and more. Details abounded—the medallion above the porte cochere depicted Mrs. Brady’s namesake, St. Gene- vieve, and carvings of fairy tales like Old Mother Hubbard were engraved in gables on the bedrooms’ exterior. This lecture will give you a broad view of its birth to its demise. A presentation will be given by Father Damian who served twenty years at Inisfada, 1969-76 and 1998- 2013 as a Spiritual Director. He was also in Nigeria, NY province administration, Pastor of St. Peter’s in Jersey City, in prison ministry and pastorally in various parishes on and off of Long Island. He presently resides at St. Aidan Parish in Williston Park, also still doing some retreat ministry. For information please call (516) 627-2300 or go to www.manhassetlibrary.org.
