Professor (Dr.) Surabhi Banerjee (Calcutta University, Leeds) bears many
mantles of a reputed builder of State and Central Universities, a successful
education administrator, an excellent teacher, an eminent writer and a literary
critic. Formerly Pro-Vice chancellor of the oldest university of India, the University
of Calcutta and Vice Chancellor of Netaji Subhas State University (W Bengal), and
First Vice Chancellor of State University of Gour Banga (W Bengal), currently she is
the Founding & First Vice Chancellor of the Central University of Orissa in
Koraput. Professor Banerjee is one of the few Indian women academicians who have
taken a string of top-level assignments in higher education. She is also lauded as the
harbinger of many academic innovative initiatives and reforms in the oldest
University in India. She has spent 36 years in academics out of which 12 years have
gone into building universities.
Prior to these assignments, she was a Senior Professor in West Bengal Higher
Education Service and Professor and Head of the Department of English, University
of Calcutta. She was also the Founder Director of the Centre for Creative Writing
and Translation Studies at the University of Calcutta.
A scholar of English Literature, Professor Banerjee penned a popular literary
Column The Weekly Word in The Times of India for nearly three years (2001-04).
She has been allotted a spacious entry as a reputed writer of books on literary
criticism in Who‟s Who in Indian Writing published by the Sahitya Akademi. Till
date Professor Banerjee has authored 22 books in English as well as in Bengali on
various aspects of English, European and Bengali Literature including books on EM
Forster, Walter Pater, Gustave Flaubert, Charles Baudelaire and on Research
Methodology.
Besides her achievements in the field of Literature, she has been the recipient of
innumerable prestigious awards which includes Indira Gandhi Priyadarshini Award
2007 for her significant contribution to higher education in India, and Gyaneswari
Award 2008 for her contributions by Yashwant Rao Chauhan University, Nashik,
among others. She was also conferred the prestigious Bharatiya Shiksha Ratan
Award 2008 by The Economic for Health and Educational Growth, Delhi. The
University of Calcutta conferred upon her the prestigious Leela Purashkar for her
contribution as the Best Woman Literary Critic for the Year 2005.
As one of the seniormost Vice Chancellors in India, Professor Banerjee has served as
a member of several eight (8) Search Committees for the appointment of Vice
Chancellors of several Indian Universities in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh,
Kerala, Karnataka, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh. Professor Banerjee is
the Member, Convener and Chairperson of many academic as well as literary
committees and Higher Education policy making apex bodies all over India and
overseas including important committees in MHRD, NAAC, UGC, NKC, Sahitya
Akademi, South Asia Foundation India (SAF), MSSRF (MS Swaminathan Research
Foundation), AIU (Association of Indian Universities), and IGNOU (Indira Gandhi
National Open University)/DEC (Distance Education Council).
Taking over the challenging task of building a Central University in one of most
backward tribal regions of India Professor Banerjee has set out an ambitious plan
with a pan-Indian and global perspective for creating a world-class institution while
also ensuring that local tribal communities are empowered and integrated into the
mainstream in the process.
She has travelled extensively on invitation for conference and other academic
assignments in the UK, US, Europe, Germany, France, Italy, Rome, Egypt,
Thailand, Malaysia, Canada, New Zealand, Holland, Rome, South Korea,

Currently Professor Banerjee is one of the very few Senior Vice Chancellors in India
with nearly 12 years of experience at the University of Calcutta as Pro-Vice
Chancellor and as the second Vice Chancellor of Netaji Subhas State (Open)
University, Kolkata and the First Founder Vice Chancellor of the University of
Gour Banga, West Bengal and presently the Founding / First Vice Chancellor,
