What is vermicomposting? Vermicomposting is simplycompostingwith worms. Thebestkind of earthworm touseistheredworm (a.k.a. "redwigglers"). These worms areincrediblegarbageeaters! Theyeatandexpel their own weighteverydaysoeven asmall binofred worms will producemanykilograms ofrich,sweet-smellingcompost. Finishedcompostcanbe harvested inas littleas two or threemonths. Redworms areextremelyprolific. It takes aboutthreeweeksforaneggtodevelopand as many astwenty youngsterscan behatched from oneegg. In three months theworms are sexuallymatureand will start breeding. Withinayearyouwill beabletogiveworms away to geta friendstarted! Where can get aworm bin andworms? I To startavermicomposterforoneortwopeople,aplastic bin can bepurchased from ahardwarestore. Makesure the bin has alid. Forfourtosix people, there is adesignsheetavailable,from theRecycling CouncilofOntario, tobuildyourown. Theycanlivequitehappily outofdoors until temperaturesdrop to4°C (40°F). Afterthat theyshould betaken indoors orwellinsulated. Insulatedbinsareavailablefrom somegardenand hardwarestores,orfromsomeofthecompanies listed inthis pamphlet. How can harvest the finished compost? I Afteraboutthreemonths you will notice thatthe volumeof materials hasdroppedsubstantially and theoriginalbedding is nolongerrecognizable.
