Many people used the Replaylt app to contribute pictures this year. If you can take a photo, we'd love you to become part of the yearbook team. Join our Photography class and learn to take good pictures using our really good equipment. WE DID IT!: t's over! We have finally come to the end of an exhausting process. The complete overhaul of the yearbook was a Herculean effort by a great group of people, the memorators of Selwyn. While everyone can appreciate that the 2016 book took a long time, nobody but Samir Gouin, last year’s editor who did a good job given the help he had, can understand how much effort goes into completely redesigning all the page layout and design templates we use to put a yearbook together. More than a decade of accumulated work was wiped out by Jostens telling us they no longer produce the size book we have had for more than 40 years. Some thought of walking away, given what needed to be done in short order. Not Jesse. From the beginning, he had a vision of what he wanted to see. He began planning this yearbook in Grade 10 and worked throughout Grade 11. His passion for design and attention to detail are the reasons you have this Phoenix in your hands. While he certainly had help, as you can see on these pages, his effort is why this book is outstanding. Enjoy it! ADVISOR 201608-26 FOR - A team of 6 advisors work together to bring you this yearbook. Bill Bedard (1) has more than 20 years experience helping students put yearbooks together, He is a passionate photographer. Sylvain Decelles (2) est le responsable detoutce qu'il y'a en frangais cette annee. En plus, il est photographe et technologue. Lana Ignjatovic (3) took over photography at the beginning of 2016. See page 3 for more about her photography class. Vanessa Jothy (4) worked with her Grade 10 art class on layouts for the 2017 book and the 2018 book. Jessica McNutt (5) began the elementary yearbook program with Grade6. She is responsible for making anything involving K-6 look great. Christine Morris (6) works with Middle School Students in her yearbook interest course. She is responsible for anything involving Grades 7 & 8. UNSUNG HERO AWARD goesto Richard Wills. He has always been a great friend to anyone who needs photos taken. Although he works for the Advancement Department, he volunteers to take pictures of just about anything, to the point that some think of him as the school's photographer. He has never said "no" to a yearbook request to take pictures at events where we can only get one camera. Even though he knows he is often taking pictures that cannot be used in the Veritas Magazine he puts together, he takes them anyway. He's never been recognized as an advisor, but he we makes Selwyn yearbooks better. THANKS MR. WILLS! It's not sexist, it's alphbetical. mmm FROM THE EDITOR To start off, this year was a crazy learning experience for me that I will keep with me for life, After approximately 108 years, I was given the task to change the face of our yearbook, "Different layouts! Let's add stories! Get a bigger book!” They said,., “It'll be fun!” They said... and it sure as hell was! This was a great challenge for me with clear high expectations all around... I was nervous at first although, I stayed determined to make this the best yearbook Selwyn has ever had! I'll be honest, at first, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. That being said, I had to learn how to make a yearbook whilst creating one. Trying to learn what a yearbook looked liked today, I had plenty of new ideas. It took a while to get those ideas onto paper,, but once they did, things started to pick up! That being said, I had to be ready Risin Stars... for anything that came at me. Not everybody was going to like the same ideas as mine and not everybody did. So along the way I would say that I've made great friends, and at times it felt like I had made enemies,.. Although, in the end, this was an experience where I wouldn't have changed a thing. So lastly a big special thanks to Ms. Morris for her constant contribution. Thank you to Ms. Poulin for always being on top of her stuff and helping me through so so much! Last but not least, thank you to Mr. Decelles with all the help for the french aspect of this book, Adam for helping me out even though this wasn't his year, He always went out of his way to help out. And of course, Ms, McNutt who hassled all the elementary school teachers to make sure we had everything! It was a pleasure working with you all. So to whoever may be reading this, enjoy this book... really enjoy it because so many good people have put so much time into making this special for you! Finally, thanks again and best of luck to the Adam and Sean for next year! I have full confidence they will continue to revolutionize this book beautifully, professionally and most of all, passionately. JACK OF ALL TRADES The editor must be able to take photos when the Photo Editor cannot do the job. He must also be able to lead a team of people. WELCOME TO YEARBOOK Ms. Poulin. When the call went out to all staff asking for help on the yearbook, 5 new advisors came on board. Although she was a late arrival and was not able to attend the advisors conference last year, Ms. Poulin has jumped into photography and page loyout. Her "get things done'1 personality is perfect for making deadlines on time. She has volunteered huge hours even coming in on weekends regularly. Next year, she appears as an advisor. YTB! PHOTOGRAPHY GROWS Ms. Lana & Ms. Poulin, with Grade 11 students, investigate what can be done with a half year option class. For the first time, Selwyn House offered a Grade 11 photography class. Ms. Lana Ignjatovic wished to share her knowledge and love for her craft. If the spirit and manner with which we started our journey is any indication, I would say students were in good hands. Not only taking photographs trying to get the best shot, our class included a dark room component, black and white photography techniques, and studying other local and international photographers. We were encouraged to experiment with digital and film. Our journey came to an end with a photo exhibition at a local cafe in Montreal. Students showcased their finest work. Each portfolio included a descriptive bio about the work and students were readily available to discuss or answer any questions. I can't say enough about this experience. We were inspired, and encouraged. This class is for anyone looking to master photography. I‘T fun year for us prefects! We had a bunch of goalsthatwe wanted to attain and even though we not have done them all we nitty touched base with most.
