This may be overcome by keeping a record ofeach day's character. That such a record will besoonobtainedtherecanbenodoubt, andtheresultofconstantthought j andenquirycanhavebutoneconclusion. Mr. Vennor does not put jI forwardhispredictionsas prophecies, butsimply asopinionsbasedon \ certainfacts,andwiththegallantAdmiral Fitzroy, the founder ofthe present extensive and valuable meteorological system, may say, "Certainit is, thatalthoughour conclusions maybe incorrect, our | judgmenterroneous, the lawsofnature andthe signs affordedtoman areinvariablytrue. Accurateinterpretation is the deficiency." This accurate interpretationMr.Vennorholdsmaybeattainedto, andstudy withthat result in view will be rewarded by the most satisfactory results. ButthisyearVennor'sAlmanacisnotconfinedtotheforetelling of seasons. It will have a new interest from the large amount of information and weather lore it contains ; Virgil, Shakespeare, Longfellow, Howard, Admiral Fitzroy, Doctor LoorAis, Steinmetz, Howe, Butlerandother observershavebeen made tocontribute toit, and theinformation obtained as the result oftheir observationswill — t 4 INTRODUCTION. In this regard r Andrew Steinmetz, inhis "ManualofWeatherCastsand Prognostica- tionsonLand and Sea,"says: "Every pocket book should have I^ blankpagesheaded 'TheWeather,'foreachmonth of theyear. Itis \ obviousthatbyalittle studyandattention any onemay soon become weatherwise, atleastsufficientlysoforordinarypurposes." I: Itishopedthatby the yearly publication of this manual, a new I interestwillbegiventooneof the mostinterestingandgenerally use- t ful ofstudies, and that Mr. Vennor's facts and theories, whether rightorwrong, willhavetheeffect of causing a further investigation J intoNature'ssecretswhich willresultin theincreasedusefulnessandin- j telligenceof thelearner, who willbeimpressed the more he studies j\ withthewisdomofHim "whodoethall thingswell."
