For fourteen years V. Sackville-West contributed to the Observer an article on gardening.. Amateur gardeners came to look forward to it as a weekly pleasure, for she was a poet and essayist of distinction as well as a gardener who had learnt her craft the difficult way, by creating two large gardens from scratch. In this book the best of her gardening journalism has been brought together by Philippa Nicolson, who lived at Sissinghurst for many years when married to Nigel Nicolson, Vita’s son. Although V. Sackville-West acquired over many years a great knowledge of plants and flowers, she was not a professional gardener, and she did not write as one, but her lively articles were always full of sound advice. She encouraged adventurousness in gardening, while never forgetting the limitations of a shallow pocket or a small patch of land. The book is divided into twelve chapters according to the twelve months, but every chapter is readable in any month, for she would deliberately let her pen stray out of season. There are many ideas discussed in this book which she first introduced at Sissinghurst, and one can follow the evolution of concepts into flowering reality, as in the case of the White Garden, with the help of the many illustrations of her own famous garden. O Unlike most Writers on gardening, V. o o' Sackville-West describes her failures as well as her successes and dreams, and the result is a fascinating blend of stimulating advice and a record of her creation of the rnuch-loved garden at Sissinghurst. o Jacket photo/MICHAEL WARREN £9.95 net „ m )AUJ V L APR 9 8 fi£C.'D 3 111 0 721 1 382 SEP 8 1998 SEP - 2 2003 DEMCO INC 38-2931 Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2017 with funding from Kahle/Austin Foundation https://archive.org/details/vsackvillewestsgOOsack V.
