VVooll.. 4466 NNoo. .1 3 FoFor rP Privriavatete C Ciirrccuullaattiioonn OOnnlyly NovembAeprr i-l- 22001155 MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT, USI Dear Colleagues, Greetings from Mumbai! At the outset let me wish all of you a Happy and Brilliant Diwali. I do hope this year has been equally brilliant in terms of personal achievements and successes for each of you and it is time to dedicate yourself to a new year with new goals and objectives. We, at the executive council of the USI, feel this has been a good year of many successful, educative and widely appreciated programs throughout the year. However, we are not content with that, and are currently busy organizing the birth of new programs which we feel will have far-reaching consequences on our members, be they trainees, junior practitioners or veterans. One such is the birth of IUREP (Indian Urology Residents' Education Program). The start of this was perhaps the AUA Review Board, a 2-day program organized jointly by the USI and the AUA concentrating on a few topics for final year resident trainees, followed by an in-depth assessment. This has been going on quite successfully for the past few years and is appreciated by all who attend. The program is heavily sponsored by Dr Reddy's Lab. Earlier this year, Dr Venkatesh Krishnamurthy, the Chairman Elect to the Board of Education of the USI, and myself attended the EUREP (European Urological Residents Education Program) at Prague. This is a 5-day program of intense and comprehensive education (revision) through 5 standardized modules covering most aspects of Urology. Along with this, there are daily Hands On Training (HOT) sessions with dry- lab sessions at specialized stations for Flexible URS, Basic and Advanced Laparoscopy, TURP and PCNL. It is our intention to run this IUREP program on similar lines with Indian faculty. We are in process of finalizing the content of the modules, and also looking into setting up the hands-on training stations. Watch this space! Our other program, which is currently dragging its feet is the setting up of National Urological Database. The ideas are in place, the participants identified, but things have as yet to gel into shape, and sponsors need to be identified. I have attended all four zonal meetings and I must say that the standard of presentations at each of these meetings was very good. Unfortunately, it was my experience that the attendance in the halls (with the visible exception of the SZ), did not do fair justice to the hard work put in by the presenters. Mind you, this was despite a good number of official registrations at each of these meetings. I do realize that you want to have fun time with your family; so come a day early or stay a day later, but remember, we miss your participation in the halls. In the meanwhile, our energetic Honorary Secretary, Dr. D Ramesh is busy finalizing an excellent program for the upcoming Annual meet in Hyderabad, along with the local organizing team of Dr. Jayaram and Dr. Mallikarjuna Reddy. If you haven't already registered, I would urge you to do so without delay- this will certainly be a “not to miss” event, with a galaxy of National and International participants, discussing and debating carefully crafted debates and controversies. I look forward to meeting all of you at Hyderabad. Seasons Greetings! Dr Percy Jal Chibber President of the Urological Society of India [ 1 ] [ 2 ] USI COUNCIL 2015 - 16 MESSAGE FROM HON. REPORT - MIUC INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIP - DR S BOBBY VISWAROOP I am extremely grateful to USI for awarding me this year's MIUC International travelling fellowship. I utilized this opportunity to attend this year's AUA at New Orleans. This is my first International meeting and it was a great learning experience. I presented a poster titled “Outcome of urethroplasty in previously manipulated urethra following posterior urethral trauma” in IAUA meeting. Conference venue Emory convention centre was excellent. Second opinion, Cross fire and some of the state of the art lectures were very impressive. Science and Technology hall was very informative so, was the History section booth with their wonderful display. More than any thing this meeting provided great networking opportunity. Met lot of Indian friends. This helps us in guiding our residents and juniors when they plan to attend these kinds of meeting. IAUA has instituted two more awards this year and I request my friends in USI to make use of these along with the benefits our association extends to members in attending these kinds of meeting. It is good to have one sub- speciality interest that will help us to focus better and improves learning experience when we attend such mega meetings. Research is given lot of importance and our association should take cue from this and create cells to get data registry of conditions unique to us. Also, we should be involving UROLOGY technicians and speciality nurses in our meetings. Conference also made me introspect on my training, my current role as trainer and as consultant. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my teacher and mentor Prof. Ganesh Gopalakrishnan whose perseverance made me apply for this travelling fellowship. I also thank our association secretary for his guidance and Dr. Venkatesh Krishnamurthy for his hospitality. [ 5 ] BAUS TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP - 2015 Vijay Bhaskar Reddy G It's a life time opportunity to visit centers with state of art technology in the field of urology and I have been bestowed with one such boon in the form of travel fellowship from British association of urological surgeons (BAUS). It was wonderful experience learning from the pioneers in genitourinary surgery at London (UCLH) and Manchester (BAUS Conference). If not for the relentless efforts of Dr Ravindra Sabnis (Chairman BOE, USI), Dr Ramesh ( Secretary USI) and Mr Mark Speakman (President BAUS ), I could not have made it to London because of delay caused for the grant of VISA. My observership started at University College London Hospitals (UCLH), London. On arrival Dr.Tony Mundi and Dr. Andrich's reconstructive team gave me a warm welcome. I had the opportunity to observe various surgical procedures like male sling, AUS, penile reconstruction and other urethral reconstructive surgeries for a week. I also met Mr Senthil Nathan, Chief Uro-Oncologist and Robotic surgeon at UCLH and observed radical robotic prostatectomies . I was provided with a comfortable stay at Manchester by the BAUS organizing team. I had a great opportunity of meeting the Pioneers in Urology, Dr. Inderbir Gill, Dr. Nickel Curtis, Dr. Manoj Monga, Dr. Prokar Das Gupta. The scientific content of the meeting was very informative with good, interesting and interactive sessions. I was delighted listening to Dr Percy Chibber's lecture on “PCNL and recent advances” and the response from the crowd was immense for that session. I am very thankful to the Urology society of India for giving this opportunity to attend BAUS meeting and meet international giants. Mere words could never express my gratitude to my mentor Dr V. Surya Prakash for his continuous support, guidance and encouragement throughout my residency. He has always been a great inspiration and role model to me. Satish Babu It was a dream come true for me, when I received the communication from USI regarding my selection to the much revered and prestigious British Association of Urological Surgeons travelling fellowship - 2015. I had great learning experience during observership at University College of London Hospitals (UCLH). I was given a warm welcome by the reconstructive urology team of Professor Mundy and Dr. Andrich. I had the opportunity to observe various complicated urethral reconstructive surgeries including AUS, Total Penile reconstruction and male sling. Dr. Andrich was very helpful and shared her views on reconstructive urology. I had the privilege of meeting and watching Dr. Senthil Nathan, Chief Urooncologist and robotic surgeon at UCLH. I had the rare opportunity of watching the most complex robotic assisted procedures like nerve sparing radical prostatectomy, salvage prostatectomy, partial nephrectomy and radical cystectomy. After an enriching and fruitful observership at UCLH, I headed to Manchester to attend the British Association of Urological Surgeons Annual Conference 2015. The academic scientific program included uro-oncolgy, Endourology, Andrology and female urology. It was indeed a pleasure to listen to the stalwarts like Nickel Curtis, Pat Malone, Inderbirsingh Gill, Prokar Das Gupta. We also had a very interesting session on Mini Perc by Dr. Percy Chibber- present USI president who demonstrated the techniques lucidly. I also got the opportunity of doing a robotic simulator training course at the stalls put up by the makers of Da Vinci, intuitive surgicals. It was very helpful hands on training course for me. During the conference I could interact and learn a lot about the new emerging technologies like MRI fusion guided prostate biopsies, new LASER sources, Robots etc. On the whole this travelling fellowship provided me a great learning experience from the best in urology. I thank the USI and Dr. Percy Chibber for this rare opportunity. I also thank Professor A. Tyagi, HOD, Department of Urology, SVIMS, Tirupathi for his continued encouragement and support. [ 6 ] EUROPEAN UROLOGICAL RESIDENTS EDUCATION PROGRAM - 2015 Ashwin Mallya EUREP, held at Prague Czech Republic every year is a much awaited event in the calendar of every European Urology Resident. When I learnt of the opportunity to attend it through the USI Olympus travel grant, I was hoping I could attend it too. Luckily for me I was chosen and could witness the 6 day program between 4th and 9th September, 2015. A stellar cast of teachers, leaders in their respective fields took us through functional urology, BPH, uro- oncology, andrology, stone disease, paediatric urology, urological infections and trauma over 6 days. It was, in short, a synopsis of what a graduating Urologist should know. The best part about it was the interaction between the faculty and the Residents, which made sure there was never a dull moment. Interacting with Residents from all over Europe and even places like South Africa and Australia exposed me to newer perspectives. A very interesting aspect of this program is it's connect with social media, mainly #twitter. This was highlighted quite often by faculty and residents there as a resource for on-the-go education. Hands on training (HOT) sessions for flexible URS, Laparoscopy and TURP were well organised. The tutors were as enthusiastic about passing on the skills as the residents were in learning the same! Prague is a beautiful, historic city and worthy of visit. An evening at the BBQ and karaoke session organised by the EAU, was delightful too. We (the residents from India), were also invited to a dinner organised by Prof Marcus Drake (from Bristol) and Dr Jay Khastgir (Swansea) for the residents from India as well as the UK. There was a lot of healthy interaction there as well. I also had the opportunity to discuss at length with Dr Percy Chibber and Dr Venkatesh Krishnamurthy (from the USI) who were there at Prague to observe the proceedings at EUREP. This was a learning experience in itself. Along with my experience at EUREP, I was also able to do two clinical attachments at Paris. One in Institut Mutualiste Montsouris, observing Prof. Xavier Cathelineau and his highly skilled team perform several robotic prostatectomies and partial nephrectomies and the other at Hopital Tenon with Prof. Olivier Traxer observing several RIRS procedures. Exposure to their hospital systems and protocols was very useful. Overall, it was a wonderful experience and will remain the highlight of my residency days!! I extend my gratitude to the USI for giving me an opportunity to visit Europe and broaden my horizons and all the faculty members and colleagues at Institute of NephroUrology, Bangalore, specially the Head of Department (Urology) Prof Keshavamurthy R for supporting me throughout my tenure here. Ankur Bansal I would like to thank USI for giving me this opportunity to attend 13th European Urology Residents Education Program took place on 4th- 9th September 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic EUREP. It was an amazing experience to attend such an excellent program. I attended various modules on different topics of urology. Hands-on Training sessions (HOTs) on laparoscopic and endoscopic techniques, with a one-to-one tutorship is very helpful. It enhances my clinical knowledge. I also got the opportunity to meet so many legends in urology there. I thank the Urological Society of India bottom of my heart, for conducting fellowship programs. I am heartily thankful to Prof. S.N. Sankhwar (Head of Department of Urology, King George's Medical University, Lucknow) and other teachers for guiding me which helped to build up confidence and get a fellowship. I think, these interactions will help senior residents in improving, clinical skills. My overall experience was very nice and I would like to thank once again to USI for organizing such an excellent fellowship. Also, I thank my family, friends and all seniors for their support and blessings. [ 7 ] Kalpesh Parmar I feel privileged to be a part of EUREP 2015. It was six days teaching program held in Prague and it was worth the experience, travelling abroad and attending it. The program included extensive teaching on common urologic disorders and was very well organized. The teaching sessions were excellent and quite fruitful. Faculty from all over the world shared their vast knowledge with us and we had quality discussion on various topics. One of the highlight was the Hands on Training session held in Laparoscopic and Endourology. I personally enjoyed meeting all Faculty members and colleagues from other countries and discussing their work culture and experience in urologic surgeries. I further extended my journey to Hamburg and Rome where I did short observership course under Professor Andreas Gross from Asklepios Klinike and Professor Carbone from La Sapienza University. It was indeed great observing many endourology and laparoscopic procedures and learning new advances in field of urology. I am very thankful to them for allowing me to be part of their team. Representating India in EUREP 2015 was a feeling I would not able to express in words. My sincere thanks to USI and BOE for giving me this opportunity and I am looking forward to be part of other USI activities to be held in coming years. EUREP 2015 helped me not only widened my knowledge, but also meet international faculty and make friends around the globe. My deepest gratitude to my parent Institute PGIMER, Chandigarh and my mentors for constant support and guidance throughout the course. Karthikeyan V S I had an enriching experience at the 13th "European Union Residents Education Program, EUREP 2015" conducted between 4th and 9th September 2015 at the picturesque city of Prague in Czech Republic. It was a lifetime opportunity. It was a well- organized course with specific objectives and up-to date knowledge delivered in quite a short span of time. The five modules covered the entire gamut of Urology in a nutshell. The faculty had put in lots of effort to impart what knowledge was expected of the course. Lot of learning, meeting new people and overall a great experience. With lot of research going on in all fields of urology across Europe the faculty dealt with each topic in the stipulated time and presented the most latest facts on each topic. Each faculty was an expert in his field doing cutting edge research work and it was fascinating to learn from them the subject from basics till the latest happening thing in the field. All questions were answered by the faculty with due concern and the aim of the course was that each participant should go home with clear concepts and it was true. I attended two Hands on Training (HOT) sessions - Laparoscopy and Flexible URS. HOT tutors were experts in the field and were able to tailor the session according to the skill level of the participant. At the end of the session, special training objectives were taken care of. The HOT sessions were conducted in a state of the dry lab, with latest equipments like digital technology, thanks to Olympus. Feedback plays an important role in EUREP. It was astonishing to listen that any faculty who scored less than 4 out of 5 points on the student feedback would not be a faculty in the next EUREP. This helps them to maintain the standard of the course. The course also had another unsaid rule that all faculty should base their classes on the EAU guidelines even though they were experts in the fields. Many thanks to the Urological Society of India for the constant support and the USI-Olympus Travelling Fellowship which made it possible for the Indian Residents to attend one of the world's premier educational programs for urological residents. I specially thank my institute and teachers for providing me this opportunity. Looking forward for IREP, soon. With available experts in our country, I am sure IREP will reach great heights and it will become every resident's dream to attend it during the urology training. Raman Tanwar EUREP is the most sought after resident education program all over the world. This program integrates lecture based coverage of all relevant topics in urology, case based discussion to apply theoretical aspects to everyday clinical situations and hands on training that can help one refine his/her skills with regards to laparoscopy, Transurethral Resection of Prostate and Ureterorenoscopy. EUREP invites 360 residents from all corners of Europe and a few residents from various parts of the world. My attempt at passing the USI Fellowship exam was without the complete awareness that EUREP was not just a fellowship but a new adventure. The course this year was conducted from 4th of September to the 9th of September at Hotel Clarion Congress, Prague. Prior to the course I had the priviledge to visit the Medical University of Vienna where I was tutored by Prof. Shahrokh F Shariat and Dr. Markus Margreiter with respect to my interests in Endourology, oncology and Andrology. It was an eye opening visit for me as I could realize the difference in standards and appreciate why policies and decisions differ from country to country. My brief stay at Wein, Austria lay the ground for my subsequent experience in EUREP and I realized that EUREP was a very good opportunity to not only learn urology but to experience the very best of training. Infact many of the widely acclaimed faculty that I met across the various centers in Europe had participated at EUREP may during their residency and they motivated me to enjoy EUREP thoroughly. As the course started, we were conveniently divided into a set of 5 groups and [ 8 ] assigned to undergo a classroom based training in 5 modules, covering one module each day. EUREP presented before us some of the finest urologists who had done well not only academically but also clinically. These teachers were experts in their fields and had contributed to the European guidelines and existing urology literature. After lunch sessions were interactive case based discussions and some common urological problems were discussed in great detail. Residents from all across Europe had their experiences to share with different forms of therapies and it was an exciting time to hear that what was laid down in the books was being practiced with integrity. The course was also a unique window of opportunity to connect with my international colleagues and understand their way of working and approaching the patients. The hands on training sessions allowed participants to go through a guided set of exercises. One experienced laparoscopic uro- surgeon was available by you side for about 45 minutes to guide you through skills that are essential for basic and advanced laparoscopy, TURP and flexible ureterorenoscopy. It was really motivating to see so many urologists giving their time to the future of urology and actually taking pain to solve doubts. Many of them are today my social colleagues and in touch through the online medium. After EUREP, I had the opportunity to visit the University of Naples "Federico II" where I was hosted by Dr. Paolo Verze and Prof. Vincenzo Mirone. During this visit I had the opportunity to learn about Men's Health , Andrology and Sexual Disorders. A complete day of lectures on Andrology was laid down for me to help me utilize my visit. Overall the Olympus USI Travelling Fellowship was a unique experience that has broadened my horizons and allowed me to understand urology and scientific literature in a new way. The fellowship has been a source of knowledge and friendship. I am thankful to my institute PGIMER and Dr. RML Hospital, Olympus and the Urological Society of India for providing this wonderful opportunity. Suresh Babu Vedala It's an imperishable experience to attend the 13th European Urology Residents Education Programme held on 4th-9th September 2015 at Prague, Czech Republic. EUREP is a wonderful platform for all the budding urologists with proper outlook regarding the recent trends in the field of Urology and good hands on training experience in URS, TURP & Laparoscopy. Lectures are quite informative and interactive with excellent faculty like O. Traxer from Paris and M. Drake from UK. My stay in Prague is quite comfortable with pleasant weather, competitive yet friendly environment, welcome party and BBQ and Karaoke evening. It's a great opportunity to interact with various renowned international urologists and get guidance from them and also many international residents and make friends with couple of them. I relish these memories for my lifetime and definitely this is one such milestone in my life for which I have been longing for. My special thanks to USI- BOE, Olympus, EAU, My institution - Dept of Urology NIMS, Hyderabad for providing me such exceptional platform as without your support this could not have been possible for me. I hope for a similar educational programme to be conducted by USI- BOE in India so that many Indian residents like me, will get benefited in future.
