The scope of the conference is to improve our understanding of the changing land- scape of media. It has a particular focus on forms of media that are user-centered and on the way they will be delivered over a Future Media Internet. It aims to provide a high-profile, leading-edge forum for researchers, engineers, and standards developers to present their latest research, techniques, and experiences in the field of user-centric media. The First UCMedia conference was held during December 9–11, 2009 at Hotel Novotel Venezia Mestre Castellana in Venice, Italy. The conference`s focus was on forms and production, delivery, access, discovery, and consumption of user-centric media. Delegates from industry and academia joined the conference for three exciting days of new idea dissemination and technical discussions. After a thorough review process of the papers received, 23 were accepted from an open call for the main conference and 24 papers for the workshops. The technical program of UCMedia 2009 reflected well the current priorities in overwhelming vol- umes of content, user-generated content, changing distribution mechanisms, and changing representations of media, and was organized in seven sessions. In addition, a considerable part of the technical program was devoted to consolidated and emerging application areas for mobile services, multimedia and user experiences, multimedia search, and retrieval and interactive TV. Lower-layer issues such as identity manage- ment in peer-to-peer networks and legal issues in virtual worlds also attracted the attention of conference authors. Keynote speeches were given by three very prominent members of the user-centric community: The keynote speech titled “Towards Truly User-Centric Convergence of Multimedia” was delivered by Nadia M. Thalmann from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. The keynote speech entitled “Challenges and Opportunities in Multime- dia Content Delivery” was delivered by Aggelos Katsaggelos from the Northwestern University of Chicago, USA. The keynote speech entitled “Networks and Media: Trends and Prospects on EU Research” was delivered by Luis Rodriguez-Rosello from the European Commission. Moreover, an invited speech titled “NEM: Net- worked and Electronic Media European Technology Platform” was delivered by Pierre-Yves Danet from France Telecom/Orange Labs, so as to highlight the industry perspective on user-centric media aspects. Apart from the main track all delegates were invited to participate in in-depth discussions in the five pre-conference workshops, covering a wide range of topics including: virtual worlds, digitally mediated home-on-demand for neonomads, person- alization of media delivery platforms, mining user-generated content for security and experience design, and evaluation of social user-centric media applications. VI Preface On behalf of the Organizing Committee of UCMedia 2009, we would like thank the volunteer efforts of all the Workshop Chairs, TPC members and reviewers, and the strong support of the Steering Committee. This conference was organized under the sponsorship of ICST and CREATE-NET. We are grateful to Springer for their finan- cial sponsorship, to EC-funded project nextMEDIA for technical cooperation, and the Networked Media Unit of the European Commission and especially the Head of Unit Luis Rodriguez-Rosello and the Project Officer Isidro Laso-Ballesteros for their great support! We hope that the delegates found the symposium both enjoyable and valuable, and also enjoyed the architectural, cultural, and natural beauty of Venice. UCMedia 2010 is scheduled to be held in September 2010 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain. In addition to the technical sessions, UCMedia 2010 is also soliciting tutorials and workshop proposals.
