Export Sales Highlights This summary is based on reports from exporters for the period January 31-February 6, 1992. NOTE: The acronym "USSR" refers to the republics of the former Soviet Union. Wheat: Sales of 287,000 metric tons (MT) fell by one-half from the preceding week's level and were off by more than one-quarter from the 4-week average. The major increases were reported for unknown destinations (110,000 MT) and Japan (108,100 MT) . Exports of 762,000 MT were up 3 percent from the week earlier, but down 9 percent from the 4-week average. The principal destinations were the USSR (201,000 MT), Japan (122,000 MT), China (108,600 MT), and Pakistan (71,200 MT). Corn: Net sales of 212,500 MT were off two-thirds from the prior week and three-quarters from the 4-week average. Increases were reported for unknown destinations (55,800 MT), Japan (55,100 MT), Spain (51,200 MT) , Israel (20,000 MT) , and South Korea (20,000 MT), while decreases were reported for Taiwan (40,900 MT). Exports of 779,700 MT were 48 percent higher than the previous week and one-third over the 4-week average. The major destinations were Japan (376,800 MT), Taiwan (113,100 MT), and the USSR (108,300 MT). Barley: Sales of 17,300 MT—all to Israel—were 16 percent below the week earlier. Exports of 15,600 MT were 86 percent below the prior week and three-quarters under the 4-week average. Israel (15,600 MT) was the destination. Sorghum: Sales of 108,100 MT resulted as major increases for Mexico (135,800 MT) were partially offset by reductions for Japan (18,500 MT) and Turkey (9,300 MT). Exports of 196,400 MT fell 16 percent from the week earlier and 1 percent under the 4-week average. The major destinations were Mexico (92,600 MT), Japan (47,500 MT), and Turkey (35,700 MT) . Rice: Sales of 34,100 MT were off 46 percent from the week earlier, but were 9 percent above the 4-week average. The major buyers were Saudi Arabia (6,800 MT), Algeria (6,000 MT), Belgium (5,800 MT), Haiti (3,800 MT), Canada (3,800 MT), and Mexico (3,000 MT—all rough). Exports of 18,500 MT were down 24 percent from the week earlier and 4 percent from the 4-week average. Jamaica (4,500 MT), Haiti (4,200 MT), Mexico (2,900 MT) , and Canada (2,100 MT) were the primary destinations. Soybeans: Net sales of 245,600 MT—the slowest of the marketing year—were off one-half from the previous week and the 4-week average. Major increases for Spain (123,800 MT) , the Netherlands (108,100 MT), Belgium (50,000 MT), Japan (38,100 MT), and South Korea (31,000 MT) were partially offset by reductions for unknown destinations (158,800 MT) and Sierra Leone (15,500 MT) . Exports of 670,400 MT exceeded the prior week by 82 percent and the 4-week average by 42 percent. The primary destinations were Spain (211,100 MT), Japan (142,900 MT), the Netherlands (115,000 MT), and Taiwan (56,700 MT). Soybean Cake and Meal: Net sales of 79,900 MT were up one-half from the prior week’s level, but were one-fifth below the 4-week average. Major increases for the USSR (103,800 MT), Mexico (20,700 MT), and Venezuela (13,100 MT) were partially offset by reductions for unknown destinations (80,000 MT). Exports of 93,900 MT were 6 percent above the week earlier, but nearly one-third below the 4-week average. The primary destinations were the USSR (42,000 MT) , Venezuela (16,400 MT) , and Algeria (15,800 MT) . Soybean Oil: Sales of 26,000 MT were the result of increases for unknown destinations (15,800 MT), Tunisia (6,200 MT) , Turkey (3,000 MT), and the USSR (1,000 MT) . Exports of 54,100 MT were the largest of the marketing year. The USSR (36,700 MT) was the dominant recipient, followed by the Dominican Republic (7,400 MT) , Tunisia (6,200 MT) , and Turkey (3,800 MT) . Cotton: Net sales of 54,200 running bales (RB) were 12 percent below the previous week and 53 percent below the 4-week average. The primary buyers were Indonesia (13,600 RB), Mexico (11,400 RB), Turkey (8,700 RB), Japan (6,500 RB) , and Taiwan (5,100 RB) . Sales for the 1992/93 marketing year of 25,500 RB were mainly to Japan (21,600 RB). Exports of 189,500 RB were off 6 percent from the prior week and 4 percent from the 4-week average. Asian destinations accounted for 77 percent of the week's shipments; West European, 13 percent; and Western Hemisphere, 10 percent. Hides and Skins: Sales of 259,600 pieces were 28 percent lower than the preceding week's level and 38 percent under the 4-week average. Whole cattle hide sales of 224,700 pieces were primarily for South Korea (93,100 pieces) and Japan (72,900 pieces). Exports of 456,500 pieces were 5 percent above the previous week, but 2 percent less than the 4-week average. Whole cattle hide shipments of 439,000 pieces were destined mainly for South Korea (220,500 pieces) and Japan (99,600 pieces). Sales of 50,500 wet blue hides (mainly unsplit) were more than four and two-thirds times the week earlier and nearly two and one-third times the 4-week average. Italy (21,000 unsplit), Japan (10,500 grain split and 4,400 unsplit), and South Korea (13,300 unsplit) were the major buyers of wet blue hides. Exports of 25,700 hides were one-third below the prior week and 43 percent under the 4-week average. The primary destinations were South Korea (4,600 unsplit and 1,900 grain split), Italy (4,500 unsplit and 1,000 grain split), and Japan (3,400 grain split and 2,100 unsplit). Net sales of splits totaled 449,300 pounds—down 90 percent from the previous week and 71 percent from the 4-week average. Major increases for Italy (326,800 pounds) and South Korea (154,500 pounds) were partially offset by decreases for Hong Kong (23,000 pounds) and Thailand (9,600 pounds). Exports of 1,475,800 pounds fell 8 percent from the week earlier, but were 27 percent above the 4-week average. The primary recipients were South Korea (517,000 pounds), Hong Kong (427,000 pounds), Italy (250,800 pounds), and Thailand (230,400 pounds).
