UNBS is mandated to co- ordinate the elaboration of standards and is (a) a member of International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) and (b) a contact point for the WHO/FAO Codex Alimentarius Commission on Food Standards, and (c) the National Enquiry Point on TBT/SPS Agreements of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The work of preparing Uganda Standards is carried out through Technical Committees. A Technical Committee is established to deliberate on standards in a given field or area and consists of representatives of consumers, traders, academicians, manufacturers, government and other stakeholders. Draft Uganda Standards adopted by the Technical Committee are widely circulated to stakeholders and the general public for comments. The committee reviews the comments before recommending the draft standards for approval and declaration as Uganda Standards by the National Standards Council. © UNBS 2005 – All rights reserved iii UGANDA STANDARD US 569: 2005 Fresh fruits and vegetables — Guidelines to labelling 1 Scope 1.1 These guidelines concern the marking of consignments of fresh fruit and vegetables to which common standards apply in accordance with the provisions of those standards in connection with "marking". The application of these guidelines does not exempt exporting companies from complying with the specific laws and regulations relating to the descriptive labelling of produce in force in importing countries. 1.2 The packer and/or dispatcher are responsible for marking in the exporting country, as defined in 1.1. 1.3 These guidelines do not apply to the labelling of prepackaged units for direct sale to the consumer. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies. US 7 Labelling of pre-packaged foods 3 Types and methods of marking 3.1 Methods of affixing markings 3.1.1 The descriptive markings stipulated by the standards should be affixed as follows: a) either on a label of one of the types shown in Model 1 in the annex and fixed in such a way as to ensure its conservation; or b) by means of an ink stamp or printing; or c) by a combination of both methods. 3.1.2 The national official control mark may be added to the above models. 3.1.3 Whichever method is used, the stipulated particulars shall be indelibly marked, clearly visible and legible and grouped together on one side or end of the package. 4 Size of the labels 4.1 The layout of labels of the types illustrated in the models in the annex apply solely to the part of the label on which the particulars expressly required by the standards shall appear. © UNBS 2005 – All rights reserved 1 US 569: 2005 4.2 In cases where labels corresponding to model No 1 or No 2 are used, the name and address or code mark of the packer and/or dispatcher may be separated from the other stipulated particulars provided they remain on the same side or end of the package. 4.3 Where particulars are ink-stamped or printed, the area so covered shall be at least as large as that covered by the corresponding type of label. 5 Particulars on labels or ink stamps The particulars appearing on labels or ink stamps or directly printed shall be printed, and not handwritten, in Roman lettering and in a language generally understood in the country of destination. Figures should be at least 7 mm. in height. Depending on the method of packaging used, the labelling shall be done as follows: a) for consignments in packages of whatever type, each package shall be provided with a label (or ink stamp) corresponding to Model No 1 or Model No 2; b) for consignments in transparent bags or nets, the Model No 1 label may be placed inside the package provided it remains clearly visible and legible from the outside; c) for consignments in containers or transcontainers, a label corresponding to Model No. 1, Model No 2 or Model No 3 shall be affixed to the inside of the container or transcontainer; d) for bulk consignments in a means of transport or a compartment of the same, a label corresponding to Model No 3 shall be affixed to the inside. 6 Particulars on transport means or packages Means of transport or packages used for the consignment of prepackaged units shall be labelled in accordance with the provisions of Clause 5. 7 Downgrading 7.1 Where a consignment is compulsorily or voluntarily downgraded, the indication of the previous quality grading shall be overstamped or cancelled indelibly and the new quality grading put on according to the same procedure as before. 7.2 If No 2 type labels are used, the downgrading shall be done by tearing off or obliterating one or more of the grade identification strips until the appropriate one is reached. 7.3 If an official downgrading sticker of the type shown in Annex B is used, this shall be stuck on top of the previous grade mark. 2 © UNBS 2005 – All rights reserved US 569: 2005 Annex A (normative) Model No. 1 Name and address of packer and/or dispatcher: (or code mark) Name of produce (where necessary): Variety (or commercial type): Country of origin: Class: Trade name (where appropriate): Size (where appropriate): Weight, number of units (where appropriate): Model No. 2 Name and address of packer and/or dispatcher: (or code mark) Name of produce (where necessary): Variety (or commercial type): A Country of origin: R II I XT Trade name (where appropriate): E Size (where appropriate): Weight, number of units (where appropriate): Model No. 3 Reference number by means of transport used: Name and address of packer and/or dispatcher: (or code mark) Name of produce (where necessary): Variety (or commercial type): Country of origin: Class: Trade name (where appropriate): Size (where appropriate): Weight, number of units (where appropriate): © UNBS 2005 – All rights reserved 3 US 569: 2005 Annex B (normative) Example of a control mark Indicating the category and the identity of the official control center authorizing the downgrading 4 © UNBS 2005 – All rights reserved
