Gould The enclosed map was developed by the Puerto Rico Gap Analysis Project (PRGAP) and displays a land use classification of Puerto Rico. The map identifies three land use regions; Urban, suburban, and rural, and displays developed (built-up) surfaces. Urban areas are predominantly developed (greater than 20% developed land surface within a surrounding 1 km). Suburban and rural areas are predominantly natural land cover with suburban areas having a higher population density. The suburban areas could also be considered densely-populated rural and as the wildland urban interface (WUI). The classification was made using information on the density of developed land and on human population distribution. The classification can aid in the understanding of how people use and develop the island and serve as a tool in land use planning.
