Description:

Unseen Banaras is a collection of articles published over the years by the renowned pathologist Dr. Bhanu Shanker Mehta. These articles attempt to reveal the so aptly put unseen Banaras which remains hidden to the non-discerning eye.

Each article tells of the different aspects of Banaras from the Mythical age as described in the Puranas to the stories related in The Jataka tales and The Panchatantra. He has also combined this with more recent records of the East India Company and the British Raj.

He has also taken a lot of descriptive material from the annals of Foreign travelers who had visited Banaras from time to time. These include Fa-hsein, Hueng-seng, Travernier, Bernier, Alberuni, James Princep, Herotodus, Megasthenes and others from ancient history. He has used this material to take us on a tour of what was, what it is now and what it may be.

This book does not just deal with the history of the town but also makes well thought out suggestions on how to improve the city without making damaging changes to the ambience of this ancient city as has been the trend in modern times.

Dr. Bhanu Shankar, now an octogenarian, has over the years become an authority on the subject of Varanasi and its history. He has attended and spoken in many seminars on this subject. Highly respected throughout the city as an expert on the subject his fame has spread overseas and often foreign visitors come searching for an audience with Dr. Mehta so that they may benefit from his vast knowledge on the subject of Varanasi, modern and ancient both.
